Life is relaxed, you can leave the treadmill behind as long as you have some external income. It is almost impossible to get a legal job in Panama unless you are a citizen. Jobs in this area pay very poorly compared to Panama City.

Most people who are here either have an external income like pension or create their own business, something you can do.
Visit and you will have a sense of the community and environment and that will help you decide if it is right for you.

If you can find a job that will enable you to use the computer long distance with your pay base in the U.S. - then you'll be okay, otherwise jobs are very hard to come by for non-Panamanians. As far as real estate, it appears that each area of Panama - and there are many - has a lot to offer, with prices to match. You need to get a real feel for the various areas, climatologically and geographically, before you jump into anything. Your degree specialty knowledge will be very welcome but on an adjunct, volunteer basis I'm afraid.

All the things you enjoy doing are available in Panama, some of them here in Boquete or within a few hours away.

Don't lose sight of the fact that in order to enjoy living in another country, you must learn to enjoy learning about and living with the culture and all the positives and negatives that brings. Acclimation to being a permanent "guest" is not for everyone. For me, I can't think of any place I'd rather be now that I've become accustomed to life here. Job? What's a job??
