Hi, Everyone!
My wife and I are getting ready for our move to Boquete later this year and we have a question for those of you who had some of your household items crated for shipping.
We have a kitchen countertop and backsplash sculpture we would like to crate and bring with us. The countertop is carved from terra cotta, and mounted on a combination of plywood and stainless steel.
This will require us to build 18 separate wooden crates to hold each of the pieces. We read that Panamá has certain requirements about wooden shipping materials, but the document we found is over 20 years old. It specifies certain types of treated wood that would be acceptable for crating OR what type of fumigation will be required once it arrives in Panama. Seems strange that wooden furniture is exempt, but we don't want to challenge the logic ... we just want to minimize problems any way we can.
Can any of you share your experience about crating and shipping ... the requirements you discovered, materials you used, costs you incurred, hassles you endured? Did you build the crates yourself or let the shipping company handle that for you?
Thank you so much for your guidance --

We had a piece of furniture packed in a large wood crate. It was in the container with the other stuff. There was no problem bringing it in. That is a beautiful backsplash. No wonder you want to bring it.
The sculpture is called, "Love's Everlasting Garden" and it tells the story of our courtship and first 10 years of our marriage. We were going to try and sell it and then realized that it's too personal of a thing for anyone else to really want.
Thanks for your input --

Hello Linda.. We moved here 4 years ago and had a lot of our large art and sculptures crated for shipment. No problem getting anything in. We worked with Raynier and Canal Movers...
Good Luck... Are you bringing in a container?
Hi, there!
Thank you so much for your response. Yes, we're probably going to end up with a 20' container -- we still have about 6 months to get rid of all of the stuff we don't want to bring.
