Please keep up with local news and radio stations.
The Ngabes indians are still waiting for a Presidential visit to resolve their demands over the hydroelectric plant and are having frequent road closures.
They are threatening with more closures. Recently some friends were held for 30 hrs. Yesterday they had the roads closed over 2 hrs. In and around Chiriqui Grande there have been road closures and people have been stuck with no food or water.
Be over cautious and fly if you must go to Bocas or keep up to the minute info by calling local radio stations

I think they were partially successful last time at least to delay the hydroelectric plant. This time I think they are protesting over a proposed coal fired thermoelectric plant.
No worries, Olga. Focus should be on content.. not grammar. And the Ngabes (oh, that was hard to write) can be very serious, escalating situations rapidly. Bocas Ngabes/Gnabes are more prone to violence as well, placing them smartly on the police watch list. Chiriquis are not as violent. I really hope this doesn't turn into our manifestaciones that we had, prior. Glad you posted this. Thank you.
Thank you, BEC you are correct. We are growing a bit tired of the few with the constant negatives by design. Olga is offering Ning informative quality posts for our readers with clarity and understanding in Spanish & English. This is only a forum, mistakes are fine without the critiques.
Unfortunately people are perhaps new to the area or forgot 2011 2012 riots which caused great losses for the economy, people were hurt. It was bad. Martinelli siged the law to protect the comarca and end the protests. This ruling could upset them even more. Our friend was there 31 hrs witn no food. Another group was over 12 hours. Sadly the people were concentrated on the Desfiles Patrios and little attention was given by the press.
I for one, spent New Year's in Bocas and I know many of us like to go during the Holidays. It is important to be aware of the situation and be prepared.
Good reporting Olga. It should be noted that Boquete is not immune from this. The banks here in town boarded up their windows a few years back in anticipation of trouble (which thankfully didn't come to pass). Volcan had their police station commandeered.
The Ngäbe can get serious at times. (note spelling)
Thank you
I will continue to keep you updated as I hear from locals on what's going on in Bocas with the road closures.
The link is wrong...this is the correct link which may upset the gnabes further giving it backs a legislation by Maryinelli to prevent mining in the comarcas
