No, no boats. Go to Almirante, then to Changuinola to the border at Sixaola. The border officials are right before you cross the bridge. You will need to walk across the bridge to get to CR. Then get a bus or taxi to Puerto Viejo. The bridge is a trip, it has been rebuilt, but still a little scary. Puerto Viejo is beautiful, it has that Caribbean vibe. Lots of young surfers there. Let me know if you have more questions.
And it takes a lot longer than Paso Canoas. If I remember correctly...about 4 hours to Almirante from Boquete. We parked at a parking lot in Almirante then took a cab to the border. Can get really pricey with the cabs, parking, and buses. That took another couple of hours. It takes most of the day to get there. The hotels, there are lots of them, are not really pricey if you book early online.
Thanks. This is a better starting point for me. It took me over 6 hours to get to Golfito on the buses on my last crossing. There is probably a bus from here or David to Almirante. I want to se that part of Panama on my next crossing.
