OMG the Italian Roast/ French Roast/House Roast etc all the coffee that cafe ruiz used to sell in the clear bags for $7.20 a lb is now packaged in gold bags and sells for $11.20 a lb they also added the word Gourmet so it is now Gourmet Italian Roast.
Does anybody know who has a good dark roasted coffee, I used to mix there French Roast (which is an expresso roast) with there Italian Roast which is a little lighter but now not sure I can afford it.

Panama Joe is the house brand at our place and it's also the Christmas Cheer that I send to family and friends in Canada. We grind and brew Medium roast Joe in the morning and bring out the Dark roast for cappuccinos in the afternoon or evening. Casa Ruiz has been sold, which is no doubt the reason for the price increases over there..
Ruiz was sold??
Panama Joe Coffee is all i drink.
Appreciate the primer on coffee production, and i am aware of the pressures, particularly on small growers...my point was that Ruiz is still producing and selling their bulk coffee at the $7 price point, just not in their retail store, so they must still profit or they would not have any to sell (and only the $11+ would be available)...i was only providing information for those of us who have been regular Ruiz customers as to the new limitations on buying it, so as not to waste a trip...as for the "few" dollars i would say that the difference in my budget just for myself would be approximately $25 a month, double for a couple, and while still single digits, still a hit. I never bought Geisha because its just too expensive.
As for health benefits (FYI i am from Seattle, home of Starbucks) for every opinion on how bad coffee is for my health, i can provide a study that says the opposite: https://www.yahoo.com/health/potential-super-antioxidant-in-coffee-...
Just saw the clear bags yesterday, at Rey, for $7.40.
Have you all forgotten there was a devastating fungus called Roya that come through here last year and ruined many coffee trees? With constant spraying, my small amount of trees were saved and are green again (with a few exceptions) but the harvest this year will be 1/4 what it was last year which was a bumper crop. Many other farmers are reporting the same. No flowers, no beans. Also, the drought last summer didn't help. My neighbor's trees were leafless and all cut down because he didn't care. Now Panama Joe lost one of the many crops he depended on. So before you complain about a couple of dollars take into consideration the money lost by those who grow and depend on coffee for their livelihood. With a lack of production this year, wait til next year.
Panama joe is the way to go
That rhymed!
I was just at Ruiz, and have been a loyal steady customer for over 3 years. They have now stopped selling the 500gm ground in the yellow bags at the retail store, as well as the clear plastic whole beans 400 gm which were not displayed but could be purchased ($7 and $7.30 respectively). What they have displayed is only the export gourmet in the gold bags that are less than 400 gm for $11+... When i complained that i knew they still packaged these and could buy both at Romeros for less than $11 and started to walk out i was informed that i could buy those products only in the warehouse office next door with exact cash or credit card during business hours (8 to 4) Mon. through Fri. I just said i was not a tourist.
There are many small coffee farmers that would be more then happy to sale you coffee at a better price and better quality .They can be found at sugar and spice, and the TMMM or inquire among your friends
