How does this sad event in Canada turn into a discussion on religion, race, and politics in the States anyway? For the wise crackers about Canadian gun control. In the year 2011 there were 3.6 homicides per 100,000 citizens by firearms in the U.S. During the same year in Canada only .51 (or one-half of one person) per 100,000 was a victim in the same manner. That means a person is 7 times more likely to be murdered with a firearm in the U.S.A. than they are in Canada. Enough said. One young soldier died senselessly today, another was murdered Monday near Montreal. Let them Rest in Peace.
The man killed today was a Canadian soldier performing ceremonial guard duty at the Naitonal War Memorial. I don't speak for all Canadians, since we're not North Korea, and despite my girth, I am not easily confused with Kim Jung-un.
But here's how I feel. A guy came out and shot a soldier performing an important task. One that is performed in many countries the world over, be it L'ossuaire de Douaumont, Arlington or any other national war memorial. It is a direct and explicit assault on our state, our values. It is an assault on me as an individual - for this war memorial and its guard of honour epitomize the best of Canada.
Anyone who feels that Cpl Cirillo "had it coming" is deeply misguided, and lucky to live in a country where holding that opinion will not lead to their beheading.
Bob. There is nothing but admiration for him. He was a reservist who accepted the one-time honour offered to him to take a turn as Honour Guard at the Cenotaph (Canada's war Memorial) . Canadians like and support their troops. Canadians at the time, under Prime Minister Chretien (center left Liberal Party) were against participation in Iraq. The current Government, under Prime Minister Harper (center-right Conservative Party) believes in supporting the US in the current ISIL situation. It's an oversimplification but accurate.
details are still sketchy, but looks like some homegrown clown, who fell in love with the whole jihad thingy. So yeah, a radical Islam issue. There are few moose in the immediate area, and municipal ordinances against shooting them near the tourist spots like Parliament (some soft-hearted Europeans find it off-putting.) In Winter though, we do club baby seals on the Rideau Canal - but only on weekends.
If your intention is to attempt to draw a causal link between race and crime rate, I recommend you produce some pretty solid evidence in presenting your case.

I love clubbing baby seals and Moose is the most delicious meat there is!
The solders death is tragic and his killers race has nothing to do with it but, to refer to it as a"thingy" makes it less important.

Go to Pelee Island, the southernmost part of Canada and watch Lake Erie freeze. Low crime too! Too cold, nah!
no wonder most of my friends never post on ning.

The religion of Peace?
And how is gun control working for you?
I am insensitive about this issue. If more people in the area had guns maybe the "criminal element" would have been dealt with sooner.
Moldbuster, we're at 1.6 per 100k pop in terms of homicide rate. So I think our gun control laws, generally speaking, have worked rather well.
The shooter today apparently had a hunting rifle of sorts, not an ideal weapon for mass murder.
