Hello Any and All,
My wife and I are coming to Boquete at the end of the (Western) summer and can hardly wait to experience the trip. We will be with a tour group for a week and then on our own for about a week afterwards in the Boquete/Volcan area. An unfortunate aspect of blogs and discussion groups is the concentration on the negative. Can anyone comment on day to day living in a positive light about living where you do without being Pollyanna about it?
Also, we are not rocking chair people and are looking for a regular, meaningful volunteer opportunity to work with or assist with wildlife. I don't see much in the area which surprises me except for Raquel's Ark in Volcan. Enlightment would be appreciated in this matter. Thanks in advance for any and all info. Charlie Monroe, Oregon.

Oh, Ms. Pollyanna, a little bit loopy, but also profound.
If it is the tour guide I think he would be better off being his own guide !
I was told there were once monos on the finca, but they ate 'em.
Exactly who are these exalted "indigenous people" of whom you speak so highly, Doug?
Hopefully not Lee's neighbor, recently spotted shooting monkeys out of trees.
There are people who revere the local wildlife, there are people who have a deep understanding of the local wildlife, and there are those who, out of necessity, eat the local wildlife.
Quite possible that a person could fit all three profiles.
And of course habitat loss also driven to a large extent by need.
And fires set, to provide better grazing, also driven by need.
Unfortunately the end result is a very diminished ecosystem, regardless of who we may view as culprits or heroes.
No complaints. Life is good in Panama. Enjoy your visit. Here's an upbeat group for you.

There is wild life out here but where people move to, the wild life move elsewhere. Nothing in the way of hunting though.
