Has anybody driven to Bocas lately? Is the road safe? How long does it take? Any not too expensive but nice Hotels or Cabanas for four people you could recomend? I would apppreciate your input or advise. Is there a safe place to park the car? How much do they charge for parking a day? Thanks

It's a beautiful drive… and don't discount stopping in the area of Fortuna for a night or two when you pass through. It's got a magic all it's own. Two places I'd recommend if you decided to stop are Refugio de la Brisa del Diablo, or Finca La Suiza… both in Fortuna.
Drive with cuidado, especially in the rain.
I drive to Bocas 2 or 3 times a month. The road is fine. Just watch for the potholes. I just got back a few days ago. You can park your car in Almirante at Estacionamientos Leiza next to the water taxis (Bocas Marine Tours and Taxi 25).
It takes us about 3 hrs to Almirate from La Acequia. We like Isle Careneros. It is much quieter than Bocas town and only a 2 min. taxi ride. There are houses( 2-3 bedroom) for rent (min. 3 day) on the water there. Quite nice for 2-3 couples from $180 - $250/night. They all have docks for water taxis. No cars on the island and there are good restaurants within walking distance if you prefer not to cook.
By the way, the purifier in Bocas is back online and MINSA has declared the water safe to drink.
Water service will resume on Isla Colón and Isla Careneros in Bocas del Toro Monday morning.
The Ministry of Health authorized the resumption of service after samples from Big Creek Lagoon on Isla Colón showed no signs of contamination. Serice was suspended last week due to high levels of contaminants.
José Donderis, director of civil defense agency Sinaproc, said that 6,000 residents of both islands were supplied with water during the suspension. The agency sent tanker trucks to communities and also handed out bottled water.
The agency ended its emergency operations at 9 p.m. Sunday.

We drove there right before Xmas. It takes about 3.5hrs from Boquete the road is very windy at some points. There are several places near the water taxis in Almirante where you can leave your car and they watch them for you. I think its like $5 per day for parking. There are 2 main water taxis to Isla Colon and its about $5 each way per person. The boat ride is about 25min. Don't be discouraged when you get to Almirante, the water in the harbor can be off-putting but once you get to Isla Colon or one of the other islands its another world...
