I am hoping someone has recent experience in driving across the border to Costa Rica. My husband Art and I would like to drive to Costa Rica to visit some friends. We own our truck and it is registered and insured here in Panama. What paperwork is necessary to go to and fro? Thanks, Stacey

I have been back and fourth a few times, You need to purchase Insurance for Costa Rica at the border. Then go through checking out of Panama and then Checking into Costa Rica. I sometimes use the helpers at the Panama border. Costa Rica will help a little. Don't forget to pay the exit tax in Costa Rica when coming back to Panama. Oh yeah you can only take your vehicle out of Panama if you have residency. Good luck.
En 2011 Nous avons de Québec jusqu'à la frontière Panama
Notre voyage en jeep c'est terminé à Golfito Costa rica
Et retour à Québec
Beaucoup de frontière 24,000 kilomètres
Bonne chance

Hi
I read the great article and have a question.
Somebody who lives in Panama with a E-Cedula wants to drive a car he bought in the US to Panama. In a year he can apply for the Pensionado status and all the benefits.
Can he border hop a couple of times until he can apply for the Pensionado status (he has a Cedula and an American car not imported in Panama)?
How does it work? (the info i found here on Boquete ning is about non-residents with a Panamanian car who want to border hop)
Does he have to go with his car every 90d?
Thanks!
in 2012 i did that for about a year... the car and i were both tourists...it was tied to my passport... after my third crossing coming back into Panama the aduana told me in no uncertain terms that it was time to make it legal in Panama (indeed on my next trip to the David aduana i was refused an exit permit)...at that crossing i met a man with a trailer full of his possessions and a dog who had been doing the same thing and he was not allowed to enter without paying the tax then and there since he was a resident, and owned a home in Panama
The non Panama plated car will be permitted for a fixed time in Panama. I nationalized my car before that time ran out. Then car can then be in Panama forever, but not necessarily the owner.
In my experience, rent a car in the border CR side, its easier and cheaper, way less paperwork and BS
What car rental agencies are available at the border on the CR side?........
I would like to hear from someone that took the bus to CR, how much from David and are there different destinations?
I am possibly opting for the same...THE BUS...anyone have any info? Would leave from David and need to get to Liberia pretty much the opposite border! Quite a distance. Trying to keep this cheap and do not want to fly. Help!!!
Hi Mary and Stacey,
Maybe one of you could start a new thread re "Bus to Costa Rica"
People who Do have that info may not look at Car to CR??
Just a suggestion....to bring it up to the top?
