My wife & I are currently in Boquete, exploring becoming expat residents. We like what we have seen to this point. We do have one major concern. My wife has wet type macular degeneration. The sight in her left eye is pretty well gone. She also has the condition in her right eye. We caught it early, found treatment that has done a good job of preserving her sight where we live in the states. We are currently trying to find specialist here to continue the treatments (currently done every 10 wks) in David. Having to go to Panama City would not be a deal breaker, but David is a much better option. Does anyone have any leads we could pursue? Thanks for your help.

Hi Ted: I have the exact same condition, AMD-wet, in both eyes. My right eye is much more afflicted. When I wake in the morning and open my left eye, I see the black cloud moving upward. For those who don't have this affliction it is really a horrible condition. There is NO cure, your eyesight just gets worst day after day. For a year and a half I went to at doctor in Panama City, whose name is DRA. NG at Punta Pacifica Hospital. I received injections in my eye every month until it just got too expensive to continue the treatment. Her fee at the time was around $465. a injection, $18. a small bottle of eye anti-biotic, Hotem room for two nights, transportation (buses, taxi's), restaurants, etc... it all added up to a pretty penny. In my opinion, Dra. NG is the best doctor for this condition in Panama. I had a friend who had cataract surgery and a piece of the surgery instrument broke off in his eye, Dra. NG was able to repair the damage (as far as possible) so when other eye specialists recommend her you know she is good. Ted, if you care to converse more about this please e-mail me at panamapatrick @dot com.

An update on our findings. We were able to consult with Dr. Miguel Molina in David yesterday. He is not qualified to handle the treatment that my wife receives. Her doctor in NM provided us with a letter which details her treatment, and after reading it, he can only recommend Dr. Edith Lopez in Panama City. So we will try to set up an appointment with her before we head back to NM. Thanks to everyone here for you input. Much appreciated.

Dra. Lopez provides these treatments regularly for a good friend. Apart from her high level of professionalism, she is a very nice woman, originally from Boquete. Dr. Arosemena works closely with her, referring cases with retinal or macular issues.
Dr. Edith Perez de Lopez
Opthamologist practicing in the Clinica de Retina y Vitreo, Consultorios Punta Pacifica, Boulevard Pacifica, Ground Floor, office 12.
Thank you for the information. It looks like we will go back to Panama City a couple days early before we go back home, so that we can check this out.
Dr Augusto Arosemema in Paitilla Clinic, Tel. 206-2424. Speaks english
Where is the Paitilla Clinic?
Dr. Augusto is my ophthalmologist as well, Lily. An amazing man.
Dr. Miguel A. Molina, at the Hospital Chiriqui, might be a good place to start.
He speaks good English, and it was easy to get in to see him. His office is on
the 2nd or 3rd floor of the main building at the front entrance.
He did my mother's cataract surgeries last year. 6670-2121 or 774-0128
