Favorite Restaurants in David

When I usually visit my mother, we normally stay home and maybe venture out once or twice to Boquete or David.  The normal place we go in David is the cafeteria style retaurant below the Hotel Occidental (I believe it is called) for their wonderful empanadas de pollo and amazing Greek salad.

This time I have had the pleasure of staying with Don Ray and his wife Liliam here in David and have had fun eating at various locations, so I thought I'd give my humble opinions of my new favorite places.

Top of the list - Tops (quite fitting, I must say) - they have an excellent gyro (I prefer the chicken) and I usually get a hummus with pita bread to go for my dinner.  The owners are such nice people, which to me always makes a big difference.  We've gone twice already in my 2 weeks here, and I'm just itchin' to go back...

Not far behind - Mezcla Gourmet - Suggested by Liliam since they have good burgers, I of course had to be different and had a salami with mozzarella, tomato and pesto on ciabatta bread.  FREAKIN YUM!!!  I was also glad to find a juice bar as I am accostumed to getting my liter of fresh juice daily in mexico.  I ordered a celery, kale, cucumber and parsley juice - also SUPER YUMMY!  This place has easily slid into my second favorite place we've been to.

Still holding strong - I'm sorry, but I'm not sure of the name of the resaturant, but will ask Don Ray and replay the name to this post - but it was a franchise type place that had chicken, fish, or beef.  I ordered a chicken kabob and was expecting one, but two gigantic ones were served (I don't eat much at one sitting) with a small corn on the cob.  Oh mah gah yumminess!  The service was nice and the price was right - my plate cost $6.

Would've scored higher but... - Terraza's (I believe? located behind Super Baru) - I had a wonderful sandwich from there served on homemade bread with salami, various veggies and cheddar, but they lost points in my book as when I asked for mozzarella instead of cheddar I was told no because it would offset their inventory...?  Huh?  May be a small detail, but it just didn't make any sense.  I guess their motto should be "You can have it your way, as long as your way is what it says on the menu!"  Haha!  I would go back because the sandwich was good, I just get irritated with explinations that really make no sense (side note - as I live in Mexico this is not an uncommon occurence for me and yes, I do always speak my mind to point out the absurdity.)  Although I did not partake the desserts looked delicious as well.

Not sure how much longer I'm going to be here, but I'm definitely hoping to hit all of these places at least one more time - especially Tops and Mezcla Gourmet.

Hope y'all can appreciate an outsiders views on the yummy restaurants in the area and please feel free to suggest any that you consider excellent and that I should try before I leave.  Much love to all!

  • Pecado and Cuatro are my favorites in David. Both are gourmet and both slightly cheaper than TGIF.

    • I hope any place ranks higher then a "chain" from the US! TGIF is extremely overpriced here and the service stinks! I would have to research which corporation owns TGIF, but I would short the stock right now .. And may look into it now LOL!

It's only a convenience factor of last resort.
  • The name of the "Still holding strong" restaurant?  Chicken kabobs sound like a nice change!  I believe you were here to try Rosita's Pupusas...?  If I'm correct, then that was a nice treat for you; we've had them and they are tasty!  We are reading about your mom's progress and continue to send well wishes your way.

    • It's called La Parilla de la Estancia in Plaza Real.  Please don't ask me for directions there, as I still am utterly confused by the maze of streets here in David.  Here is a link from Chiriqui Chatter:

      • It's one block up from Hotel Cuidad de David. Agree! Very yummy for us carnivores!
      • Gracias Deborah.  Buen Provecho!  Come up to Boquete if you have time as we have some good places as well.  But hopefully you'll be heading home soon as your momma recovers. :)

    • Love this picture!

  • Deborah,  Wow you took my whole writing out of context. Try reading it again . I never said that they were selling spoiled food their at Tops and the restaurant I was talking about the soup was in Boquete. I guess a lot of it is the stress you are going through. Lets hope?

    • As I stated your comment about the soup was a bit confusing.  You never stated where "their"  (*there) was, just that you knew a woman from Boquete.  Considering it was right after talking about Tops, it made the statement confusing.

This is quoted from your statement about Tops "One of the main reasons that we wont go back is because of their inventory rollover. I drive by Tops everyday and rarely see a customer their. Its easy to get something from spoiled food here, and for this reason we try to go to a restaurant that has at least some type of business."   This leads one to believe that you are saying they probably have spoiled food due to inventory rollover.

I actually went back to Tops today (yeah for salted caramel ice cream) and asked about the soup as I found your statment confusing (as others might have as well) - they do not sell soup.  They also explained they are very concious of expiration dates as they prize themselves on selling top quality products.

While I am going through stress, that has nothing to do with defending a restaurant I believe in.  Maybe one should try to be a bit clearer in their writing to avoid confusion. Good day.
