A milestone celebration and a new initiative in Chiriquí

By Linda Card

When you visit Boquete you're bound to come across the Boquete Community Players Theater and Event Center. Along with the church, the historic Panamonte Inn, and the Flower and Coffee Fairgrounds, it's a bona fide landmark in this highland town. Located just over the bridge alongside the Caldera River that flows through the town, the BCP, as the center is known, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this September.
The group known as the Boquete Community Players was formed in 2005 by a number of resident expats who wanted to bring live theater to the town. At first they staged performances in a local bank building, and then a generous business owner gave the group a lease on a perfectly located building. It needed a lot of work, so the volunteers got busy and transformed it from a dilapidated shell to a multi-purpose venue and theatrical stage. The new BCP Theater and Events Center opened in 2009 and is now the hub of social life for the community.
The BCP's tenth birthday will take place on the weekend of September 19-20 with the theme “Boquete Community Players Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow.” Two main events are planned to recognize those who have contributed to the center’s success and to review its history. On Saturday evening (September 19), a gala dinner-dance will take place at El Oasis, a B&B next door to the BCP. A specially prepared meal will be served amidst speakers sharing their triumphs and challenges during the ten years of the center’s growth. Live music will be provided by local musicians so the attendees can dance the night away in a festive atmosphere.
On Sunday (September 20), two presentations of a very special production will be staged at the theater. This "Nostalgia Show" will present a revue of various scenes, songs, dance numbers and dialogues from BCP productions of the past ten years. Many of the resident actors, dancers, and musicians who have graced the stage over the years will participate in this show. It's destined to be a memorable event.
In honor of the anniversary, the lobby of the center will feature works from several local artists. The children’s art class, sponsored by the Boquete Public Library, will have their work on display, along with painters, photographers, and other visual artists from the highlands. The team organizing the event also plans to have slide shows projected in the lobby that chronicle the history of the BCP. While tickets for the special events will no doubt sell out quickly, if you're in Boquete the weekend of September 19 be sure to stop by the BCP to see the displays and extend your congratulations to the members.

The new Chiriquí activity club

Meanwhile in David, a new community project is in the works. The Chiriquí Activity Club is an informal group open to all who want to gather for social activities, shared experiences, and learning opportunities. The brainchild of expat Karen Walter, the group meets monthly in David to discuss plans and goals, and members are encouraged to share ideas and suggest activities. Karen produces a monthly newsletter for registered members to post photos and notes about activities and promote upcoming events. You can learn more by signing up for their newsletter.
The intent of the club is to bring people together—expats, retirees, and nationals—of any age. "I want the members to benefit from it," Karen says. "I'm good at organizing, managing the logistics, and motivating people. But my intent is for the members to participate by leading events, writing for the newsletter, and contributing their talents directly to the group. We all have so much to give to one another, and we can all grow together."
Among the activities of the club are a cooking class with a local Panamanian woman who demonstrates tipico cuisine; a language exchange where Spanish and English speakers come together to learn from one another; day trips to various locations of interest in Chiriquí Province; overnight trips to destinations throughout Panama; and festivities to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays among friends.
Maybe 10 years from now the BCP will be marking another milestone and the Chiriquí Activity Club will celebrate their first 10 years here. Maybe you'll be here to participate in all the festivities...
