Iodine & Selenium

I just reread the "Salt" discussions on this forum and would like to supplement my diet with iodine and selenium as a preventative measure.  I am post menopausal and am feeling sluggish recently and felt these supplements may help.  Can they be bought in Boquete otc?

Marie and Linda, I'm not opposed to natural treatments, but I think self-diagnosis is risky to dangerous. Get tested, and then decide how to proceed.

Hashimoto's is an autoimmune disease with a genetic link.  It isn't caused by not eating enough iodine.  Some research has shown that too much iodine can even trigger thyroid disease.http://www.webmd.com/women/hashimotos-thyroiditis-symptoms-causes-t...

Taking too much of any trace element can cause problems.  It's better to get your thyroid function tested before ingesting supplements that might do more harm than good.

I'm wondering about all this fuss on ning about iodine.  How many cases of goiter has anybody ever seen in their life?  I suspect most of us are getting enough, especially if we have eaten iodized salt all of our lives.

You might also want to think about a daily dose of coconut oil.  I sometimes mix it with oil of oregano and hold it under my tongue for awhile before swallowing it.  It has great anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties.  Do some investigating.  Here's a link to start with:  http://www.homeremediesweb.com/oil_of_oregano_health_benefits.php   By the way, VitaCost carries this too.

It sounds like your immune system is not working. A simple blood test could give you and your doctor lots to go on. As for iodine, there is one law in this jungle. Your thyroid will not function without iodine! Processed foods, restaurant foods have lots (too much) salt but it doesn't contain iodine. The reason Hashimotos disease is the main cause of thyroid problems in the US is because the salt is iodized so the main thyroid problems have been eliminated.Yes, I have seen lots of goiters, a friend of my wife has one now. But having thyroid problems does not mean you have goiters. The insanity is not making sure you are getting sufficient iodine in a town full of thyroid problems. Many markets sell Mortons salt but you have to read the bottom of the carton to be sure it is iodized. Sea salt has insufficient iodine but the same amount of sodium. If you use sea salt you are paying more and you have to find a source of iodine elsewhere.
