Written this last American Independence Day, REGARDLESS OF POLITICS, this article discusses what can be a very divisive and painful subject for expats and those considering becoming an expat:
Can you live in Boquete and still be a “True American”?
See if you agree with this answer.

That's very interesting, thank you. From your McLean's article:
"almost 30 per cent of Canada’s 100 largest cities did not report a single murder in 2015, including Kamloops, B.C.; Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.; Shawinigan Region, Que.; and Fredericton."
- I wonder if this statistic holds true for U.S. cities as well.
And cops helping others happens every day everywhere. Why shouln't they? After all their motto is "to serve and protect", not "to chase and harass minorities", right?
That sucks, eh?
But I am pleased for your good fortune and to hear that you will inject ever greater amounts of money into the Panamanian economy. You can purchase at least two more crates of Balboa every month with your COLA, right?
i think we may have gotten off topic. . . as usual...
That goes for every other Nationality as well...
Agreed, Walter. The word "true" is vague and ill defined for this purpose, and the who story reeks of the idiotic position of saying "I'm better than you because I'm a hard-working patriot who actually lives in his/her country of citizenship - and you're a deserter" (or slacker, or whatever.)
Just another contrived, petty, silly and banal discussion here on ning.
No pain for me - as an expat, I love both Panama and the U.S. - I just cannot afford to live in my old home in the U.S. these days. And I learned to enjoy and respect Panama and its people after I came here.
However, I still support the fundamental principles that inspired the decades of progress that made the U.S. a world leader in many areas. I despise the current U.S. government's attempts to reverse that historical trend and reduce the role of U.S. leadership in so many areas by becoming an isolationist and protectionist nation as the rest of the world moves ahead.
Opposing the current efforts to reduce of America's "greatness" in the eyes of the world is absolutely consistent with being a "True American."
What's happening with the U.S. on the world stage right now is unfortunate, but it is only a small (albeit expensive) "detour" in the journey to global emancipation...
Well written article......Looks to be an interesting site.............thnx for the lead........
Whew, I guess I'm a true American as I don't live in Boquete...(but rather just down the road)
Expat since the 80s.... and I love Canadians...pardon my teasing in an earlier post. (lived in Dartmouth NS back in the day working the offshore oil patch Sable Island and Lab.)
usnr
or canadian?
of course. i put up my flag every canada day and consider myself canadian even though i am living here full time. i will always be canadian. why would that ever change? i am a guest in Panama and although i enjoy many comforts and privileges here I will always consider myself a guest. that is just the way it is and personally I think that is the way it should be. I as an expat, should remember that I have been invited into someone's home and should behave as such. That is how i was raised.
