I got Jim Keihl to clean my furniture when it was mouldy. After cleaning everything, we run a fan continously on low to circulate the air, & use dehumidifiers when damp or raining. No more.problems with mold in a closed casita.
I make and sell El Matador Mold Killer. It comes in a 16 ounce spray bottle, and I supply a simple guide sheet sent by email. It costs $7.00, and it is good for drapes, backs of area rugs, furniture (particularly the backs which are often unfinished), leather jackets, leather caps, shoes, etc. On porous surfaces one treatment lasts a long time. If you have mold on hard surfaces such as varnished furniture or counter tops, you apply the mold killer and wipe it off a short time later to avoid damage to the finish. In such cases you may need to apply more frequently.
In the quantities used, El Matador Mold Killer is not harmful to humans or pets.
I also make and sell El Matador Colloidal Silver. It is principally for medical use, but can be applied in a fine mist spray to the spines of books, oil paintings, etc. to prevent and kill mold. It is more expensive because it contains pure silver. An 8 ounce bottle costs $15. The cost per ounce is much lower for the quart size, which is $45. You should keep it around anyway to use for burns, cuts, scrapes, colds, flu, etc. It kills over 600 different bacteria, viruses and fungi.
I just checked and discovered that I have only one 16 ounce spray bottle available for El Matador Mold Killer. I have some higher quality 24 ounce spray bottles available. The price for a 24 ounce bottle of mold killer is $10.
I'll try to find more 16 ounce bottles in David. Finding the right containers here is sometimes a challenge.
1 Take the furniture outdoors on a dry, non-humid day. If you're unable to carry the entire piece of furniture outdoors, take the cushions, pillows or any removable elements outside. Cleaning upholstery outdoors helps keep the mold from traveling through the air indoors.
2
Brush off all visible mold or discolored specks on the upholstery using a dry scrub brush or broom. Give the entire fabric a good brushing while wearing a dust mask to avoid breathing in mold spores. If cleaning indoors, set the furniture atop newspaper to catch any powdery residue. Discard the paper carefully afterwards.
3
Vacuum the furniture thoroughly using an upholstery brush attachment. Allow the furniture to sit outdoors for several hours or even all day, if possible, to air out. Airing it out also helps dry any moisture trapped within the fabric or foam to help prevent additional mold.
4
Mix equal parts water and rubbing alcohol in a bucket. Dip a sponge into the liquid and wipe any spots that remain after brushing and vacuuming. First test the solution on an inconspicuous area to ensure it does not discolor the fabric.
5
Spritz the furniture gently with white vinegar using a spray bottle with a fine-mist setting. Allow the furniture to air-dry while still outdoors or in a well-ventilated, dry room with plenty of daylight.
Things You Will Need
Scrub brush or broom
Dust mask
Newspaper
Vacuum cleaner with upholstery brush attachment
Rubbing alcohol
Water
Bucket
Sponge
Vinegar
Spray bottle
Tip
Discard the vacuum cleaner bag after vacuuming to avoid spreading mold spores. If the vacuum is bagless, wash the dirt chamber out thoroughly and replace the air-cleaning filter, if it has one.
I agree with this completely! Once the mold is visible, it's war and Lorelei outlines the steps that wore Ken for us!.
Also interesting that sime wood attracts mold more than others. Ironically it's realitvely good quality wood that came from the US - anyone have any answer?
I noticed that DoIt is now carrying the EvaDry line of dehumidifiers in case you want something smaller than the giant ones most of us have in our homes. Perhaps set a small one near your curtains and furniture if that's the only place you're having issues. I believe I saw 2 sizes of the portable types along with a few of the plug in rechargeables.
Get a couple of Air Oasis Machines from the USA. They used to be sold here at the Tuesday Market, but no more. We had that problem six years ago, and it cleared up immediately after buying two of their 1,000 sq ft. coverage units. They also make a smaller unit, and we put one of them in our closet. No more mold.
I run our air conditioners 30 min. per day and use a combination of
1/3 white vinegar, 2/3 water, 10 drops of each of the following clove oil, peppermint oil, lavender oil, tea tree oil put into a quart spraying jar and keep up with the cabinets, floor and other items in the house.
As far as the draperies and furniture you need to keep moisture out of the rooms. Dehumidifiers help a lot.
