If you live in the immediate Boquete area this may not be a problem. Lower down the hill with higher temperatures and higher humidity this is a major problem that definitely has to be reckoned with.
We had a nice black "leather/vinyl" 3-seat sofa which was a ‘gem’ in our Volcancito home however on moving a little further down the hill the vinyl started to peel. We had a black ‘Fall’ in our living room as every shred of vinyl plastic delaminated, peeled and fell like perished oak onto the floor. Our other sofa is leather and has survived wonderfully well.
My thought is that I could keep the vinyl sofa's frame as it is a good one and have it re-upholstered with leather or at least have some nice covers made.
Can anyone recommend a good upholsterer in David or even further afield? Thanks for any suggestions.

At this point, this is just locking the barn after the horse is gone, but with vinyl upholstery periodic treatment with something like Armor-All may be a good idea to maintain the flexibility of the material.
Talk to Patsi Phillips at Casa Decor in Alto Boquete across from the Alto Dorado mini-mall. She has an upholsterer on call and can even get you fabric samples.
Just wanted to thank everyone who has provided information on where to find a good Upholsterer in David (or even further afield). I am going shopping.........
Yes, I know the problem. I bought my wife a very expensive CIAO purse in Panama City and within 6 months it did the same thing. Took it back with receipt and they were gone! Probably made with some cheap knock off Chinese faux leather. Well it looked good for 6 months! Buyer Beware! At least you can recover your sofa frame if it doesn't fall apart in the process. I think I'll go shopping for a Chinese auto tomorrow?
Well, my sofa lasted almost 3 years. I'm going to visit El Campion or Acodeco if not satisfied.
Thanks for your input.
Sent an e-mail with photos to El Campion. Actually the couch is a little bit over 3 years old. The response I got back, somewhat translated by me to English, reads:
"Good morning Mrs. Graciela, pleased to let us know of your concern. We were reviewing the information and look that the furniture was purchased 4 years ago, approximately. This defect in the furniture may be due to several factors that escapes us. Unfortunately, as the normal contrast in climate of the country, time of use, among others. In this case, to help we could offer you a discount furniture store, if you want to purchase another at our branch. Again, thank you for your time to communicate with us, and stay tuned to pass the information to the Department of furniture, so consider the revision of the goods and avoid this kind of inconvenience in the future. Have good day."
How nice, helping me to find discount furniture store at their branch to purchase more furniture from them!!! Like I'm ever going to buy anything at the stores again.
OK, let this be a warning to other unsuspecting purchasers, the couch cost over $1,000. We have no young children and the area affected is where my husband sits to watch TV.
Live in the Boquete area, Volcancito and I have the same problem. A dark brown sofa with three seats, two that open like a lounge chair. Brought it a El Campion a few years ago and it was made in Brazil. I don't believe that the location area is the fault of the peeling, I believe that it is the covering, it looks like Vinyl/Naugahyde but probably some material with inferior spray applied to look like Vinyl/Naugahyde. I love this couch but it is peeling away. Be interested in knowing a good upholsterer. My couch is 84" long ( 7 feet) so I would need someone to come to my home, too large to transport. Photos show my problem.
Does your problem look like my problem?
Ask the owner of Baru restaurant. His name is Arthuro.
Hi Debbie: I would be weary of using PENECO based on a prior forum post:
