Hey all,
I have a fino hen ( from the quebrada/monte) who had 10 chicks about 3 weeks ago. Now we are down to 4 !..our farm guys say it is because of the weater change and that they have a thing called 'morina.???...I gather a type of resfriado ( cold)...general antibiotics from Mascotas are no help.
Any suggestions? I am somewhat depressed about this...all our other finos have grown up and are robust....arrrrgghhh!!!
gracias.

Yes you are all hilarious, this I already know. And I love you anyway. Most of the time.
We are now down to 2 chicks, though all the adults (9) and teenagers ( 5) are very healthy.Got new antibiotics and hand fed it to the chicks today...broncowell or something...then after that it's herbals and apple cider vinegar..they have a very dry coop and free range in the day.I have never had this problem before. Melo says that one can epect a 50% etrition rate ( this is with their young ponedore chicks) ....we are usually do way better than that...anyway, there it is...thank you for all the suggestions(!) . Chicken raising is an ongoing learning experience! I do love them though.
look for tilisina or tigent, the first is tylan which is for repiratory problems, the second is tylan with gentamycin which I have found to be a little better, if you are dealing with very small birds you will probably have to mix it in the water, larger ones can be injected but the amounts are very small, it can also be given orally if you are not competent with a syringe & live animal!!
I think some places may sell this in tablet form too.
Try to keep young chicks in wire floored cages in the dry for at least the first few weeks of their life.
Give them somewhere dry to live in the rainy season and some antibiotics.
so most of the agropecuarios are pretty much no help..they say go to Mascotas...Gabrielle at Mascotas is his usual sullen self but if I nag him long enough ( babble on in bad espanol) he gives me something..that of course doesn't do squat...and so we go back to our own local stuff and see what happens....no point quarantining the pollitos, they are great one day and dead the next so no symptoms visiable to say who is bad..but thanks anyway.
You should as Dianne, she attended a Chicken course from some quacking University ! Oh I am sorry Dianne this is you posting. Try asking at Melo they are good at selling chicken drugs or MIDA they are usually very helpful.
right Lee but you will not be recognized unless you post in English.
This problem will restrict future benefits of muslo encuentro on the grill...sorry.
You should Google for answers. Many site for chicken illnesses there. A pretty good one below:

You can talk to the folks at Melo. When we had chickens in San Pablo Viejo there was a similar thing the Panamanians called Moko and medicine was purchased at Melo (sorry, can't remember the name of it) and they were injected with it. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but you should quarantine the ill birds regardless.
Good Luck.
