Question.....

I truly do not wish to be rude, or disrespectful, but I would like to ask the question, - what right does anyone have to ask someone who is selling their property, if they are leaving Panamá and their reason for doing so?  Clearly, if they are leaving Panamá they obviously have their reasons, whether it be for health, family, financial or any other reason, it is no one else’s business.  The reason could indeed be extremely personal which the homeowner may not wish to share.  I find this question intrusive and completely unnecessary.

Assumptions are made as to why people want to leave, could it possibly be that THEY JUST WANT TO LEAVE for whatever reason….hmmm? Maybe they are ready to move on somewhere else, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.  I personally could not live in one place for 30, 40 or 50 years, and I know people who have, and that is entirely their choice.

Yes, many people come to Panamá not knowing the full implications of living here, but isn’t it up to them to discover that, and if they have made a mistake, albeit an expensive one, have the right to move on?

Not everyone who is attempting to sell a property is trying to “make a fast buck” or gouge people, as some would say.  Taking into consideration the cost of having built a house should be reflected in the sale of that same property.  Some people will try it on, admittedly, but many only want to (hopefully) get back what they have put into that build.  Many people who come from North America think they can come here and make insulting offers, hoping that the homeowner is desperate enough to leave and will accept their insulting offer.  They are the ones doing the gouging.

I left my homeland some 30+ years ago having lived in a number of locations around the world and who knows, I may wish to return to my homeland one day in the future, just because I can, and just because I want to...no other reason than that.  Thankfully, I’m not sick, have no family ties, and may just feel it’s time.  Is that okay with everyone?

I came to Panamá having done some research, I don’t consider others’ opinions, recommendations etc., because what others like or dislike, is not always what I like or dislike.  I make my own assumptions and hold no one responsible for my mistakes,  and I believe others should be allowed to do the same.  Don’t believe everything you hear, or read.

  • The "right to question" is fundamental to freedom and to Western Civilization - including the right to question the right to question, as you are doing. In parallel, there is the right to decline to answer.

Very often prospective buyers will be interested in the motivation of a seller - a way of gauging one's negotiating strength and strategy.

You "came to Panama having done some research". Seems to me that asking questions is fundamental to good research, including the reasons for the opinions held by informed or experienced individuals.

  • Purdy, anyone who is at the stage of making a major financial decision of buying property should have completed their due diligence on Panama, but unless the question of why are you leaving is asked in a manner that makes you feel uncomfortable as in this case it seems to have, it does have merit to a future owner. If a potential buyer wants to know if there is something about the house or surroundings that is prompting the sale they have the right to ask, as is the case anywhere in the world. Sometimes the question is asked with a poor choice of words or just to keep conversation flowing. If I were in that position I would have replied that it no longer suits what I’m looking for in life but has no bearing on the property or location. Be vague, there is no need to get into anything personal, let the property speak for its self.

  • Purdy. You are fully right. I am an expat for 30 years. I say, listen to all, follow none and walk your own path the best way you can.

  • Purdy, I agree with your comments. I particularly liked the insulting offer statement. No one likes a slap in the face. Personally I would ask the question out of curiosity, but privately, not on a public forum. As Jim said the seller could make up any reason. Some people are more honest than others.

  • Maybe some folks just want information to make better decisions about moving or where to move?

"We found a better place" would be a perfectly good reason for moving.

Sometimes people get older and what felt right at 60 does not feel so right at 70.

Then, some folks just like to move.

If you don't have a good reason, just make one up, no one will know.
