Rally - Let's Fight Crime! Look at this venue.... - Forum

I have an idea I want to share with you, the community. We are ALL sick and tired of crime in Chiriqui; I'd like to sit back and do nothing, but I feel it is OUR – that is - ALL OF OUR – duty to work together and try to make positive changes we can live with. This is our chosen home.

We have the flea market every first Sunday of each month, and a secondary new one on the third Saturday of the month. The Sunday market attracts about 70 to 80 vendors and maybe around 500 people come through the market in the course of three hours (a good combination of Panamanians and gringos). Here’s my idea – we’ll set up a table, invite the mayors, Athena, police, media, and public. I see a questionnaire for both Panamanians and Expats asking for input about how to treat our maleantes – like a vote – to present to the powers that be. And this should NOT be the only anti crime rally – just another in series. Chiriqui Storage is centrally located, attracts crowds from David, Dolega, Potrerillos and Boquete, so why not go with the venue and use this opportunity?

I cannot sit and keep watching; I need to do, BUT I NEED YOUR HELP!! I need volunteers to help organize this. As Dianne said to me we need to keep the ball rolling.

I will meet with, communicate with, or assist anyone in this effort. But I am not a people person. Fifty years in the PR business drained me. But I do know a little. Pick your target, define your goal and assist everyone that can help you get there. As far as I know, there is no one local that is in Varela's party. Boquete is full of competent people.

This is too important for me to remain silent. You people are right to contact the media. But do it before you set the date, time and location. They have deadlines, electronic equipment to protect and scheduling issues. La Prensa and TVN are the most important and they have representatives in David. You are not trying to reach local officials it is Panama national officials you want to reach. A copy of the presentation from the previous gathering which was well done, a fact sheet and a helpful contact to assist the national media could recoup the value of Friday's meeting and get the attention of officials in Panama who know they have a problem looming in the Latin America economy.

Elizabeth - yes your concern of time for officialdom is well taken. Maybe set aside 11:30am as time for 1/2 hour review of what people want. Don't know at this point.

B & A - thank you for your comment - can you help? Like I said, I need help, cannot do it alone. Can you phone or visit the TV stations and radio stations?

Excellent idea, and great location, Linda. Perhaps there could be a time slot for the officials to speak? Or would that be unwieldy in the venue with all the other activities?
