Semana Santa - a good week to Avoid Travel

This is Semana Santa, the week before Easter, and a popular vacation time in Latin America. That means there will be a lot of traffic on the highways and bi-ways, and increased opportunity for 'accidents' caused by carelessness and irresponsibility.

It is the unexpected that adds to the danger of road travel here.

Who would have thought that this Bus, on it's route in Bocas, would lose control and roll over, sending 3 people to hospital and leaving 30 with scrapes and bruises.

The cause? The Bus Driver was busy chasing down a loose iguana.

Quite honestly, it would be tough to write better fiction.

There is also ongoing construction to deal with between David and Santiago and the natives are restless about a number of issues. The Barro Blanco discussions have reached a predictable impasse with the Ngabes saying there is nothing to negotiate.

I really don't know where these drivers are getting the confidence they seem to have in their equipment and skill levels. I am constantly being passed in Alto by vehicles traveling well in excess of 100 kph.

Today on the Via Rapida in David.

This is the one-way street that starts downtown and ends up at Cochez. Three cars, no major injuries.

I don't know but I think that alcohol is not part of the equation today. I think more of careless and imprudent driving.

Another Traffic Death

More tragedy this afternoon on the old section of Via Boquete at the bridge over the Rio Majagua near Portachuelo, just north of David. At least one person was killed.

  The victim in this accident has been identified as Sra. Ahiza Samudio. She was 70 years of age.

What it is incredible is the amount of car accidents and fatalities we have had this two days than in carnivals. I don't know what is happening with drivers lately.

  And possibly too many new drivers on roads that are not strong on safety features. You can go really fast but you really should go very carefully.

Two people were killed on the PanAmerican highway near San Pablo Viejo this afternoon.

  It was a young father and his infant child who died. Three others, including the young mother, are gravely injured. There are some horrid photos, one which shows the baby seat pitched to the side of the road as if it was not strapped in, and the driver literally cut in half by a metal signboard.
  One of the vehicles crossed the center ditch and headed into oncoming traffic. This could happen to any of us. Please be careful.
