Boquete Panama

Cool, Green and the best Coffee in the world

We are visiting Boquete as we are thinking of retiring to Panama. We will be in the area May 30 thru June 2 or possible longer, we have left our departure date open. We would love to hear first hand experiences on the move to Panama and the pluses and minuses. Any advice to share would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello Tom and Mary.

Don's website and Lee's blog (www.boqueteguide.com) are widely read and appreciated. If you haven't read Lee's (which I believe you would have if you are on this site), do so. I've started a blog as well (www.panamalady.com) which relates to Panama, Boquete and other places, from my perspective. I love horses, fishing, boating, beaches and I try to incorporate my experiences and thoughts in there.

Seig and Phil are developing Roca Milagro and I understand it is a wonderful area for peace and quiet and horses so do try and visit when you come down. I am sure Seig's blog will give you a good idea what to anticipate.

As I always say to people thinking of moving somewhere....move and rent first. It will give you a better idea whether you really want to be here or not.

Best of luck and hope to see you soon,

Heather

Excellent advice. 3-6 months minimum, a year even better.

Hi, Tom and Mary. Welcome! Like Don Ray, I blog about my experiences and impressions, all the way back to 2005, at my personal blog: http://atavist.blogspot.com. I also have a corporate blog with many of the same posts (the ones relating to Panama only) at http://rocamilagro.blogspot.com. I am developing a property near Boquete, just outside the village of Rovira Arriba, and our corporate website is at www.rocamilagro.com.
What I will tell you here is that there is no place on earth that is absolutely perfect,. But Panama is pretty darn good. The climate is good, the cost of living low, the people are nice, and I really like it. I plan on spending the winters at my development in a few years and other Canadians and Americans and others will be joining me there, either in full or part-time residence, including a bunch of my partners. We obviously feel good enough about Panama to make such a commitment.

Whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for your reply. I am in the middle of packing and do have some rain gear. What do you recommend, shorts, sweaters? I have been checking the weather and see you are getting rain alarms and also note the humidity is high making 60 feel more like 80. Any suggestions you can give would be helpful. We are from the Northern part of the states while we do get humidity we are not used to it like the Floridians. Thanks for your reply and I will have to look for your blog. It sounds most helpful. Thanks again. Mary & Tom

ANSWERING YOUR QUESTION:

Bring both, at less a pair of shorts, for the hot days or hours of the day,
a pair of sweeter for the cold rainy and humid nights..nice warm socks, and pajamas if you are cold feet, like me!!
If you are moving, bring a very good dehumidifier -I couldn't live without mine..
and lots of those bags, with little bowls, humidity absorbers, they sell in home depot, hangers absorbers for the closet, work great and hard to find here...I found them while living in SEATTLE, now I need them again..
have a great day, if you need more help or local info, let me know...
what part of usa are you coming from?

"Light clothing made of natural materials such as cotton or linen.
. Also, you may not find your size here.
Panamanians tend to be shorter and more slender than North Americans.
A pair of waterproof boots or shoes for the rainy season.
If you'll be in the highlands,(BOQUETE OR VOLCAN,
a waterproof or water-resistant jacket might come in handy during rainy season. In Panama City, however, it would be too hot for this.

Comfortable house shoes or house slippers.
always wear slippers now. In addition, floors here are tiled, not carpeted, and so may not be as soft as you are used to.
I have a pair of Crocs that I wear around the house and I'm very happy with them.

Thanks Patricia

You have been most helpful. We are coming into David on the 30th and staying in Boquete thru the 2nd. May go to Volcan or other areas to scope them out. We are from Sandusky OH. Snow, Rain, Sunshine, we get it all. Weather is nice here in the 60's now with a light rain. Had a beautiful weekend. Sunshine all the way. We are looking forward to our trip. Flying out of Detroit way too early tomorrow morning but will be in Panama around 2. That is a bonus. I will check out your blog for more info. Again thanks for your help Mary

if you come to volcan, cerro punta, be sure to call and say hi,
I will be happy to welcome you to this little town, let you know about the hot spots to eat or stay...
If you can join breakfast at Daly's on Saturday morning you can meet all the local expatriates..great and cheap food by the way...
Have a safe trip , :)

Hi Tom and Mary
Welcome to Boquete!
If you also want to meet ex pats from Boquete, there is a big goodby party at the Restaurant /bar
"guari Guari" today all day from noon to midnight with bands , singers, and local open mike talent.
it's also a welcome to the new owners. There is some very good talent here so I'm sure you would enjoy it. If you go, they have a TAXI SERVICE as well. We are going later and could pick you up if you wish.
Otherwise, just look for the couple that has grey hair! HA HA
If you need any assistance while you are here, you will find Boquete has some really great folks living here to help answer questions.
We moved here from Idaho and everyone thinks we are from Ohio.
Best Wishes
OLIVIA and JIM
PS we brought pets here if you need information about that.
