So this morning tragedy struck. Our best layer from Colombia was killed by Wolfie, the wolf mix dog. She had a come to Jesus talk, and is now tied up, literally in the doghouse. We tied the hen around her neck for the walk to the doghouse, but by the time we arrived, she was already trying to eat her. So... that plan didn't go like clock work, according to our friend with the German Shepherd chicken killer who had the chicken tied around the neck and cured it. Perhaps it was a small chicken and large dog... Wolfie is not that big and this was a big hen.
We're trimming the wings again today on the ladies. A few of the ladies were able to fly over our newly built fence and a were outside, scratching around in the orchard. The fence is high.
Our girls are very sweet, trust anything and everyone, and have no fear of animals or humans. So sad. It was an easy kill. We are very sad at the loss, she was our favourite and sweetest, and we're angry over this- just getting in to chickens again.. Any advice? We can't have this threat, constantly looming over us. Blaster, our Old English Sheepdog befriends everything- baby chicks, snakes, birds, lizards... she would not hurt our chickens. Just Wolfie. Our Dalmation also wants to kill the chickens and has to be in her fenced yard.
How do chickens live here? Why don't the dogs kill them? I don't get this. Why are ours particularly rotten?
Bad Wolfie!
So sad!

Ellen you are completely correct. There are some very strange expats who live in and around Boquete. This is the reason that we didn't move there, even though we've got a beautiful piece of property.
Everybody should go and see where the meat comes from, From the matador! Go there- look at it - And than bon appetite.

Have you tried to contact the specialist on criminal behavior to see if Mrs Wolf could receive a psychologycal treatment that could make her to return back to freedom without causing any harm to the other members of her community?
I know that Caesar Millan stayed in Panama only for the show but I think you could try contacting Howling Success K9 to see if Mrs Wolf could have a hope of rehabilitation.
I like this. Too funny. Great imagination and writing skills. I am with a big smile while traveling out of Panama reading this

Strange behavior from Wolfie.
But are we not the worst killers, we - the homo sapiens - with our taste for dead animals? And is our way of killing - and worse - of keeping them - not all perverted!
At least the dogs kills them instantly and not keeps the poor hens fenced in close together living in their own shit. Tranquil only by drugs.
(Not speaking of you Jessica. )
You could also use string or (yes!) yarn to string over the top of your fenced area. The Boquete Knitters were given some Aunt Lydia's Craft Rug Yarn which is very coarse, and not appropriate for baby things. We've been looking for uses for it...
