Over the past year Holidays, I traveled to 3 cities from Panama City to the States. I did the usual take off my shoes, with no socks or skins. Within 3 to 5 days, I noticed an irritant red blotch on the tops of my feet. I could not determine why, After using different creams and ointments, it finally went away almost 3 weeks later.
Then I read this article, not sure what else it could have been. Disgusting what they make us do at these airports and we never think twice or challenge.

To be barefoot in any public area (e.g. pools, gyms etc.) poses risks...
Best is to travel with socks. So far, I haven't been asked to take them off as well...
I'm afraid this is one thing I'm not going to worry about.
