I have some room to put in a few fruit trees or bushes around my house, which is on a hillside a few hundred feet higher than downtown Boquete. I'm basically starting from scratch.
Since the lot was formerly a coffee plantation, I'm not sure whether citrus would do well. I'd love to have some lemons or oranges. Do apples grow well in this area? Berries?
Good produce is so cheap at the market that it may not even make sense to grow my own. This is only my yard, and certainly not an orchard. But along with the ornamental landscaping, I thought I'd try a tree or bush that produces something other than a banana. My concern is that I'll be a little cooler and a lot wetter than some of the micro-climates in the area.
Is there a good book or online resource for landscaping in Panama? Or is the adage true that "you can stick a pencil in the soil around here, and it will grow!"?

which microclimate or barrio are you in?
In the Palo Alto area. The Bajareque rain/mist is pretty common. Certainly more so than in town.
Irrigating is the biggest issue. Pretty certain its illegal to water your plants with potable water. Better check this out first. Think about planting your trees (citrus, avos, etc) right before the rainy season starts. Think about using plants that do not need watering. Lets hope we get a rainy season this year!
