WHY BOQUETE?Posted by Linda Sherman on February 26, 2017 at 1:39pm in NewsView DiscussionsPeople ask me all the time - Why Panama - and especially Why Boquete? Here's why:Two weeks ago at the Tuesday meeting the community was invited to a day of awareness (Heart in the Park) to learn how Boquete provides services for persons with disabilities.I mentioned the great work done by the Fundacion (FPI)better known as the Handicap Foundation- where recently volunteers went on a home visit and found a severely disabled man, living alone, in a shack with no roof, sleeping on cardboard using hose for water, his body racked with painful spasms.Yesterday, Romero got a new home. Two volunteers at the Foundation, Judy and Mike Hart asked him to come and live with them. He said "Yes."That's why I live here.

What a shame. Panama is not a third world country. Surely they can be doing much better in caring for their disabled citizens instead of relying on the kindness of foreigners.
The Fundacion has both Panamanian & Ex-pat Volunteers in a collaborative effort. The Disabled are often invisible in every country and the deterioration of health can be gradual until it's overwhelming. The reason for the post is to celebrate the fine people who open their hearts daily, those are the people I want to live among.
What would have happened to him after he was found if this couple did not step up to take him in? Does Panama have anything in place such as nursing homes or assisted living facilities to care for the disabled? If not, it is shameful.

Why is it nobody reads these posts?
That is the sad commentary on ning.
Sheila,
Panama is a third world country.
When people say it is a developing country it is an excuse for why things dont get done.

Linda,
There are many great charitable things done in Boquete.
It is a shame the people on this site are busy complaining about the political posts and not reading things like this.
