Cheap (but good) Bread

Started by Penny Barrett Aug 9, 2012. 0 Replies

For a loaf of bread that's cheaper than Bimbo and twice as good, go to Sugar and Spice and turn left just inside the door. They put their day old bread on the counter at half off. Usually this means you pay $1.25 or $1.50 for a loaf of excellent…Continue

The new vegetable stand across from Airbox Express has some great prices on his produce. Worth checking out.

Tomatoes ar $.25 a pound in the municipal market now. This year has been a bumper crop.

Tomatoes are abundant right now, should be about $.50  a pound. Watermelons are $3-$4 from roadside vendors. The high price of the week is Mangoes. We asked why $1 for a Mango, the answer is the Mangoes we are seeing now are imported from Costa Rica, they will fall in price as they come off local trees in David.

Mini articokes at Super Baru. We got 4 for $1.25.

Pat the definition of fresh, is going to upset you. This is not the soft shipped in water type of fresh. This is the firm, made to melt fresh. What you want can be found, sometimes, at Super Baru in David. It is made by Quesos Chela in Capira.

So happy to hear about the cheese.  Haven't been able to find fresh mozzarella and my husband just loves it with basil and tomatoes.  I even considered trying to make it myself and then reconsidered.  Thanks for the info!

No one seems to be adding to this list.

Do you know about the Stanza cheese factory in David. When coming from David turn left at the mosque and them left again. They sell fresh Mozzerella, sometimes fresh butter and sometimes fresh farmers cheese. Nothing consistant but it is all fresh and discounted

Ceramic planters and other clay items. We discovered them being made and purchased several on the road from the Interamerican to El Valle de Anton. Very inexpensive pots and if you like garish painted items they have them also.

This information is from the original Good Deals Forum thread.

Here's my suggestion. If you need clothes or shoes (men's, women's, or children's) you should know about Imporadora Americana in David with 2 locations. They have all kinds of name brand clothings in sizes larger than the very petite Panamanian women's sizes that you find elsewhere. Most of the stuff is overstock or closeout from the states. Some of it is seconds. On Saturdays they open up the upstairs part which has even better bargains and now I see they are going to discontinue the upstairs part so they're clearancing out the clearance items. Great buys!!!!

If you like US cuts of beef try PRice Smart. They have Rib eyes and NY Strips cut correctly, occasionally they even have enough marbling to be grillable. In addition Ropa Vieja is what we in the SW US call Skirt steak and grilled and cut cross the grain it makes excellent frajitas.

Right now they also have real, no sugar added fresh, not from concentrate, Orange Juice from Panama, it's $4.00 plus a gallon but much superior to the sugar added stuff sold elsewhere.

Super Centro Ivan (formerly Lilly) in Alto Boquete has more surprises per square foot than any other place in the area.  Particularly for hardware items.  If you ask Lizzy, the daughter, she will order things for you that might otherwise require a trip to David.  They sell a full line of building materials, including sand and gravel by the 5 gal. plastic tank (bring your own tank), and tile grout by the pound.   They will cut rebar and cariolas to length at no charge, and are in general super friendly.  I recently found a factory-matched fuel filter for my Toyota - for $1.25.

The best rotisserie chicken in Boquete IMHO is at Tammy's.  $7.75 per chicken.

The cheapest is at Price Mart $4.95 per chicken

Also if you are out at Price Mart and need a few groceries, don't forget about the small Super Baru store in Chiriqui Mall back by the theaters.  Never crowded so it is a quick stop.  Generally I have found that Super Baru is cheaper on most items than El Rey.  Sometimes only a couple of pennies, sometimes 15% - 20% less.

As Jaun said, Song Depot across from Chiriqui Mall has some good prices on may items.  Just beware that many of the can goods are imported from China even though the label is in English.

For anyone craving dim sum:  The Dorado market has steamed bao and steamed shumai (mystery meat - but most likely pork).  It Sits on the counter in a steamer case by the cash register.  Comes from Panama City.  They don't have it all the time.

And I almost forgot:  Terrific rotisserie chicken at the restaurant next to Curvas.  $6.80 for a whole chicken.

Best place for can goods and selection is Super 99 in David.  Best place for good hamburger is Super Baru in David. Super Baru also has excellent steak for about $5.00 something.  .They usually have hamburger for about $1.05 or so.  Most xpensive place for meat is Rey.  Best place for quanity shopping IF your know your prices is Song in David.
