  • First, thank you all for setting up and having me in this group.

I have a situation with a Dell Inspiron Laptop which even when brand new would not work with external microphones except for one cheap type that is OK, but hard to find.  It apparently has no internal microphone and I am generally pretty good with computers.

I plan to teach some English classes online and want to set up a cheap, but decent webcam (my internal one works fine, but need better for classes, just due to angle etc.) and the voice situation has to be better before I can accept work.  I just turned down a job because I knew my set up would reflect badly.

I am going to college online with my GI Bill and not rolling in cash, but could offer something to somebody if they can square me away on this.

Thank you for your time and attention.

  • Patrick, ask yourself a question. Why is Microsoft pushing, forcing this move to Win10? And why give it away free? Ok, Win10 is spyware in every meaning of the term. Windows wants your behaviour to market to you just like Google. Your browsing, searches etc behaviour. Windows XP was fine, still is if you do a registry tweak, you can still run it. Win10 is the same kernal, code EVERYTHING since NT, except the UI. So why upgrade to Win10? You can easily block this 4gb's of spyware.
  • Hi, Bj
VPN will be slower because it should using UDP not TCP. Your choice of a router is fine and independent of your lack of speed. Routers have latency, and a bigger, better or newer which not be a feasable upgrade. Routers route traffic not augment. You could try to do a better config or port forward. But panama blocks certain protocols and throttles UDP. Sorry buddy. Frederick

  • I see frequent requests for VoIP telephone information, so here is my experience:

Many years ago I switched from a land line to one of the first VoIP telephony providers: Vonage.  While I did cut my phone bill in half, the quality was decent, but not excellent.  The price was $25/mo at that time but included unlimited calling to over 60 countries, which I didn't need.  Their rate is now $27/mo plus taxes, after a six-month introductory period.  They do include the hardware, but it is the most expensive option for mostly acceptable service.

I then switched to a Denver startup with business-class quality and a dedicated network of servers to reduce the latency time and increase call quality.  While excellent quality, their rate was $60/month and included up to 300 minutes of international calling.  It was a bit less than my previous land-line option.

Then MagicJack was released for a substantial discount, but their quality was unacceptable to me, especially having been accustomed to business-class VoIP service for a year.

Finally, I discovered a startup called Ooma which was simply in the hardware business.  You purchase the hardware (which Vonage includes in their "lease") and then phone service is free (with only a $2-$3/mo tax).  When I purchased the hardware, it was $250.  They then unbundled some included features and reduced the price to $150.  There is a current special for the next few days (until June 22nd, but check their website) for their lowest price ever at only $99.

I love my Ooma and have had it for about ten years, same hardware, no failures.  The quality is excellent (almost as good as the $60/month business-class service I had).  My mother has MagicJack and has constant quality problems with it.

While the basic plan does not include International calling, those minutes are inexpensive at a couple cents per minute.  Or you can add an unlimited International calling plan (included in Vonage's $27/mo + tax plan) for $18/mo.  All calls to either USA or to Canada are free (depending on whether your phone number is in Canada or the US, probably).

There is also a business plan for $10/month which includes virtual phone extensions so you can forward incoming calls to another co-worker in a remote [home] office... and many other features, including a second phone number and 250 free minutes of long distance (valued at about $5.00).  If you need the business plan I can get you a $50 discount off of the first year's cost of $120 (and they will also give me a $50 Amazon.com gift card).

Plus there is a free iOS Mobile Ooma App that will turn an iPod touch or iPad into a mobile phone.
