  • The Malientes are back in the Alto Boquete area!  A Loma Colorada maliente was spotted in the area of Plaza San Francisco today walking the neighborhood.  Clearly, he was a long way from home!  My housekeeper lives in his neighborhood, and when she went out front to empty our garbage, they spotted each other.  He was on foot.  She was nervous about his presence in this area and reported it to me immediately.  The assumption is that he was casing the neighborhood.  We were on our way down to David to take our housekeeper home, so we stopped at the check point at the Caldera road to tell the police.  They said they'd radio to "someone" to let them know that there may be activity in the area.  Be vigilant with your community watch program and keep an eye out for unfamiliar people in your neighborhood.  When my husband and I returned from David, we stopped at the check point again to tell the police that my housekeeper divulged the maliente's nickname.  It was a different officer at the checkpoint, but they had heard the report.  I told him the nickname in case that was a familiar person to the police.  It's very possible that he is a "scout" for his group and will report his findings of the neighborhood back to them.  My housekeeper said he is not a "member" of a gang because as far as she knows, they don't have official members; but that he is known to be associated with a group of malientes.  Keep you cameras close to document anything which could turn out to be helpful in the future.  You never know...

  • Nacional Box offers an excellent option to avoid robbery by taking care of your valuables in a safe place.

  • Are there any US or Canada retired law enforcement officers living in the Boquete area?  My wife and I are coming to Boquete in February to visit and explore the area as a possible retirement location.  As I am in law enforcement in the US, I would be interested in meeting and conversing with any retired law enforcement personnel.

  • If you own any type of firearm, please buy a gun safe, bolt it to the floor and wall and store your weopons in it.  If people continue to leave them out...  the petty criminals might just end up using it on you.  Remember, guns don't kill people, people kill people.  Thanks! Quickdraw

  • I wanted to ask if anyone can recommend someone to work on my home security system? We bought a new home that has  a DSC brand system hardwired to all points but it is not working yet after several visits from the probable installer. So, I'm looking for help on evaluate this system or ditch it or add to it. We have a dog and neighbors on the watch. Thank you !

  • Armed Robbers Target Boquete Hotel and Casino -

Several armed subjects made off with $7,000 from the Villa del Rio Hotel and Casino in Boquete, Chiriqui on Friday night. They drove off in a blue car with luxury rims and tinted windows. The hotel manager immediately called the police who were able to track down the blue car along with Carlos Isaac Saucedo Guerra, age 27, and Ariel Enrique Carrasco Arauz, age 30. They are being held as suspects but did not have the money or the gun in their possession.

  • There have been several events in the Boquete area in the last three weeks that perhaps need clarification. At AAC, it is our policy not to report every incident publicly immediately as it happens, since initial reports are frequently incorrect and may in fact hinder police investigation.

    1. Rapes and/or assaults -  About two weeks ago a violent rape occurred with the victim being a young mother on the way home from dropping her child off at school. This was followed a day later by two unsuccessful attempts in Alto Boquete. The police have a suspect and are in pursuit as the suspect has apparently fled Boquete.
    2. This week Monday, there were reports of a six year old being assaulted and a 16 year old girl reported missing. These were followed up immediately by AAC and it was determined that the six year old was an interaction with another juvenile and not rape or assault. The 16 year old was discovered with her boyfriend on a bus to Panama City.
    3. Attempted robbery at the Panamonte - Two men entered the establishment reportedly brandishing knives and went to the business office. When a quick thinking Panamonte employee picked up the phone and called the police, the robbers fled. One of them has reportedly been arrested and the crime is still under investigation.
    4. Several people have reported having their LAPTOP COMPUTERS stolen from their homes, frequently during the day. These are entirely preventable crimes of opportunity. Here are some things to think about for your own safety:
    • Laptops are by far the most popular attraction for thieves. If your laptop is visible in your house through a window when you are not home, your risk of theft is vastly increased. When you leave the house, stash the laptop someplace like a kitchen drawer. Or at least, use a security cable to attach it to the desk. Don’t put it in a display case for the bad guys.
    • Most of the thefts have occurred by way of windows or doors left open. One laptop was stolen when the home owner was out in the back yard. You need to be very aware of who might be watching your movements and you need to have perimeter and door alarms to let you know when someone is entering your property. In the “old” days, they used simple metal bells attached to gates and doors to announce visitors. It does not have to be expensive or fancy.
    • One theft occurred late at night when the thieves located a spare key “hidden” by the front door. The resident of the house was asleep on the couch in front of her laptop, which was stolen along with her purse. Nothing else was touched. Even though the house was well fortified against break-ins, this lapse created an opportunity. Be aware that unless you take specific and determined care with hiding a spare key, your domestic workers will know exactly where it is and that information can be sold to a third party with little risk. Keep your honest workers honest.
    • When people that you do not know come to your house to work, ALWAYS ask them for a cedula or other identification. Make a copy or write the information down. This simple precaution could very well deter them from burglarizing you and if they can't or won't produce a cedula, do not let them into your home.

In the last two years, the residents of Boquete have come a long way in the prevention or home burglaries. And with the new and improved police force, Boquete remains a much safer community today - if you take some simple steps to protect your home and possessions. As always, it is easier and cheaper to prevent a crime than to recover from one.

  • Betty the best answer, not a a justification, is that Bob Wolfe fulfilled an important communication function that is now a vacuum. Hopefully AAC will resolve this soon.
  • Alejandra Guerra has been found. She was on a bus to Panama City. She was a run away not a victim of a crime.
  •  This cop works in internal affairs and speaks english. Anyone can call him RE transitos or cops trying to extort cash from drivers. It is strictly forbidden for cops to handle money...period. i.e. If they are trying to get money from anyone, they are breaking the law. We need to get his contact info onto ning and AAC websites while clarifying that this number should only be used for the reporting of crooked cops.
