Comment by Tracy Hallen on May 24, 2012 at 1:14pm We are always looking for volunteers. You can drop by the library to fill out a library volunteer form. If you have specific talents or a specific area in which you would like to help, you can also send an email to voluntarios@biboquete.org.
Comment by Susan Frank on May 24, 2012 at 11:23am are there volunteer opportunities at the library?
Comment by Tracy Hallen on April 5, 2012 at 1:54pm If you brought these books for the library, we would love to meet with you and see what we can do. Jesse is in the library through most working hours right now, so you can work with him.
Comment by Susan and Pat on April 5, 2012 at 12:57pm OK Thanks
We brought with us some classic children's book in English and Spanish. We tried but we could not always get hard bound books in Spanish for the equivalent - understand that you have a plan or strategy in place - if these books books do not fit in with that, that is OK, we will make-do with them
Comment by Tracy Hallen on April 4, 2012 at 12:27pm Keeping in mind the general policy on gift doantions (previous post), we are always happy to receive materiels, though there is a strategy/policy for which books are used as part of the library collection.
First, we try to maintain a 70% Spanish/ 30% English ratio of books in the library in all sections (children's, adults, fiction, non-fiction, etc). We get many donations of English books, many of which we have to put up for sale or use in other ways so it does not distort this ratio.
Second, we are trying to acquire more hard bound or library bound books as these will remain in good condition through more circulations.
Third, any books or magazines that management does not feel is suitable for the collection is redistributed to other local schools or libraries or sold to help with library expenses (ie. other books and programs).
In regards to shipping books, I have received many shippments of library books through the general post office. You can send them to:

Hope this helps
Comment by Tracy Hallen on April 4, 2012 at 12:20pm Here is the library's general policy on all book gift donations:
The library retains the right to make the most advantageous use of materials it accepts. Gifts of books and other materials are accepted but without any commitments as to final disposition and with the understanding that they are not necessarily to be added to the collection. The same criteria used for selection of other materials will be used in evaluating gift materials.
As a general rule, the library does not accept materials which are not outright gifts. Certain objects which might be more appropriate for a museum are not accepted.
The library staff may not assign a dollar value to materials given as gifts.
Comment by Susan and Pat on April 4, 2012 at 10:19am Lorrie - got it thanks - we will ask for Jesse.
Also, when we were in Houston, we came upon a bookstore to sell some of our books - in conversation, this very interesting couple who owns the bookstore offered to send books to the Boquete library.
They had a son doing some type of "missionary" work in Guatemala and sent him a box or boxes of books so he could help establish a library. The boxes never made it past customs and were returned.
They offered to send them to Boquete after we told them about the area and the library.
Who to ask about this?
Comment by Lorrie Bowes on April 4, 2012 at 9:02am Hi Susan & Pat,
Usually I drop my books off at the front desk. Jesse is the Peace Corps volunteer and is usually around on the lower level but anyone will be happy to take the books.

Comment by Susan and Pat on April 4, 2012 at 8:07am hi Tracy
We brought some children's books with us - same book in Spanish and English - when we drop these off at the library, do we ask for you or someone in particular?

Comment by Tracy Hallen on April 4, 2012 at 7:45am Thank you for the kind words - I agree that it is a beautiful building and wonderful addition to the community.
We currently have about 9000 books and over 550 patrons with library cards. Our goal is to have 20,000 books by the end of the year, maintaining the desired balance of 70% Spanish / 30% English. As time passes, we are getting all the ducks in a row and organizing more programs. What a fun project.
