I recently discovered that iodine deficiencies in mountainous areas are a major cause of thyroid problems, particularly for post menopausal women. Chiriqui has a particularly high incidence of thyroid problems because heavy rain in the mountains erodes the iodine. Hence food produced here lacks iodine. That is why governments mandate the addition of iodine in salt. However much of the salt is not treated. This can be very dangerous. Morton salt sold in Panama states it does not have iodine.
