Having problems adjusting to Panama? You may have it better than you think.

After living in Costa Rica for nearly ten years, I find life here in Panama to be relatively easy for expats.

Of course, learning the language has been a huge asset, as well as acquiring some patience, tolerance and a basic understanding of the culture I chose to immerse myself in.

At half the price or less my standard of living is exponentially superior on this side of the border due to the excellent infrastructure, lower crime rates, and in general, a more responsible and sincere populace. L… Continue

Bus passengers from Panamá experience strange ride

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The ride was a strange one for through passengers on a bus from Panamá. The Fuerza Pública at the Panamá border got word Saturday that a bus might be heading north with cocaine hidden in the luggage compartment, according to Allan Obando, regional head of the force.

Costa Ricans shared this information with their counterparts on Panamá, and word reached them that police in Panamá had detained three persons and fou… Continue

Five days of mourning declared in Costa Rica ....... Quake's damage estimated to be about $100 million

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The preliminary estimate of the damage inflicted by Thursday's earthquake is $100 million, Casa Presidencial said Monday. The death toll rose to 17 with the recovery of three more bodies in the community of Cinchona. And the president declared five days of national mourning through Friday.

Consequently a number of activities were postponed, including the Fiesta de Palmares, which was to start Wednesday. It will start Jan. 21.

Hi Keith,
My husband and I are thinking of retiring in Boquete and would love some information. Are there any little bars that we could buy for a part time job because we use to manage a bar in the united states.
Are the people friendly? If we don't speak spanish are we in trouble? We would just love to relax and enjoy the rest of our lives, we are in our late 50"s and are sick of all the rat race in the united states. How often does the power go out? we would be interested if we go there to buy a car about how much for a reliable used car? do they pay taxes on there cars there. How much are rents there? do they hire americans there for part-time jobs, my husband is retired and needs to do something 3 to 4 hours a day. any information you can give us will be appreciated. thanks John and Bev

Keith,
Do you know an old friend of mine Michael Gianakis? I am in Michigan were he is from. I have heard that he has passed away. If you do not know him, maybe you could direct me to somebody that does.

God Bless and thank you, Chip

Hola Keith ~ you will be happy to know I've officially applied for my car insurance. BTW, I love the car and truly appreciate your help - don't know that I could have figured out the system w/o your help. Keep in touch and thanks again for everything.

Hi, Keith: Small world, isn't it? I lived in Toronto briefly in the early sixties but have been in London, Ontario since 1967. Thanks for the kind words about the two Phils. They are great guys, both, and I am lucky to have them as partners. Maybe you and I will meet too, on one of my frequent trips to Boquete.
