Maisie, our Juvenile Howler is now just over a 14 months old and she joined her friend Yahoo, who is a little older, at the sanctuary about a month ago. Everything has gone well and we visit her regularly. She is able to go off into the forest with Yahoo and they have now encountered wild Howlers from troops that live in the area. A couple of days ago a young Howler male visited their enclosure and there were friendly exchanges. Yesterday, the 2 girls went into the forest with Michelle and Yahoo found the young male, gave him a kiss and a cuddle and then returned to Maisie. The 2 of them then went home as good girls do!!
It looks as though we might be on the way to starting a new troop and our dream for Maisie and Yahoo will have come true. We raised her from just 3 weeks old and now she can be free, living where God intended, in the beautiful jungles of Panama. She joins a long list of animals and birds that have been rescued, rehabilitated at Paradise Gardens and returned to the wild to live free.
Yesterday we received a call from the Summit Zoo in Panama City. They have asked us if we can take another Howler baby - this time only just about 1 week old. Their hope is that we can raise it and again, engineer its release into the wild. If it stays at the Summit its destiny, should it survive, will be to share a cage with some Spider monkeys. We are going to collect it next week.
This week we also received another Tamarin. She is probably 3 or 4 years old and has a damaged arm where she was, apparently caught by a dog. She is now living with Limpit and they are playing together so it shouldn't take too long to get some weight off her. (She is pretty podgy at present owing to lack of exercise and poor diet). She will go, hopefully, into our breeding program, next year.
PARADISE GARDENS is about much more than just PLAYING WITH ANIMALS. This is the hands on end of conservation where sleepless nights come before parties.
