Health authorities are in alert for a possible Dengue epidemic in the country. The risk of an epidemic to be released is now high due to the fact that since 1993 (and up-to-date) 50% (!) of Panama's population has been infected (in varying levels) with the Dengue virus. In other words, Dengue has now reached critical mass in Panama's population and is about to "blow up".
For these reasons, authorities request that the population reinforce precautionary measurements and avoid the breeding grounds of Dengue transmitting mosquitoes. This year there have been reported 1,193 cases of which 1,189 are classic Dengue and 4 hemorrhagic Dengue, in Panama Metropolitan Area, Chiriquí, San Miguelito and Panama West.
Especially in Panama West, the medical authorities are in alert due to the recent cases of Swine Flu cases that have been admitted in Nicolás Solano Hospital (in La Chorrera) .The hospital's Director, José I. Rodríguez, confirmed that in 48 hours they have treated 15 cases .
10 persons came Saturday, while on Sunday, the 5th more for Influenza A H1N1. This number is worrying, in addition to the Dengue cases that are registering in the West sector.
Up to the date, Panama registers more than 700 cases of Influenza A H1N1, that caused the death of 9 Panamanians.
Health authorities remind us to reinforce the healthiness measurements to prevent the problem from increasing . Remember to wash your hands constantly, the mouth and nose should be covered on having sneezed or coughed, avoid close congested places and greeting with kisses and hand hugs.
If you present symptoms of high fever, lethargy, lacking appetite, cough, pains in the joints and limps, seek immediate medical attention.
