One of the outstanding “International” events during this year’s Boquete Jazz & Blues Festival was the Jam Session held at Amigos on the Saturday night, March 3
rd. In all, about 25 different musicians showed up from all the groups and they made for some of the most entertaining performances of the entire weekend. All the tunes were spontaneous and unrehearsed, with various artists (and instruments!) coming and going over several exciting hours.
Here is a noteworthy performance of Herbie Hancock’s iconic Cantaloupe Island by eight musicians representing Panama, USA, Canada, Netherlands and Kenya. The horn playing is remarkable (Carlos Ubarte, Jon Day, Saskia Laroo), followed by an electrifying keyboard solo (Warren Byrd), great guitar breakouts (Edgar Vargas, Maarten Bakker) and some inspired drumming (Willem Smid, Amadou Seck).
