Just posted in the Daily Beast: John Feeley, the US Ambassador to Panama has resigned “on principle,” noting that he cannot serve under the current administration any longer. Feeley’s resignation came before Trump referred to several poor countries as “shitholes,”  That probably sealed the deal though.

I admire his principles. A loss to the U.S. State Department and to U.S. expats in Panama.

Yeah but it was OK for the previous president to privately label Libya basically the same ?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to Panama John Feeley, a career diplomat and former Marine Corps helicopter pilot, has resigned, saying he no longer felt able to serve President Donald Trump.

Feeley’s departure had been communicated to State Department officials on Dec. 27 and was not a response to Trump’s alleged use of the word “shithole” to describe Haiti and African countries at a meeting on Thursday, U.S. officials said.

Trump denies using the term.

Feeley, one of the department’s Latin America specialists and among its senior most officers, made clear that he had come to a place where he no longer felt able to serve under Trump.

“As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the president and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies,” Feeley said, according to an excerpt of a resignation letter read to Reuters on Friday.

“My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honor bound to resign. That time has come.”

But there were not mass resignations of ambassadors prior to the presidential inauguration. Presumably, Trump discovered after the fact that he needed replacements in mind before eviscerating the diplomatic corps. (Many ambassadors and other diplomats left on their own accord, however.)

Being a career ambassador simply means you came up through the ranks of the State Department rather than being picked by the President from outside the Department. Both appointments are considered political. One simply has diplomatic experience, and one does not.

Big deal they send another one who cares?

He goes off and collects a fat pension.

Since this was posted to blast President Trump shouldn't it be in the Rant section?

El Gato, this was a news article reported all over the world.  It is a fact, not a rant.

He was NOT given a pink slip. This has nothing to do with Obama.

I see jim y nena deleted his comment.

Does that mean we no longer have to go to CR for US Embassy services.???

ps...Prayer Works!!!

No. Feeley had nothing to do with federal benefits being reassigned to Costa Rica. That came from Washington.
