I was in Scotia Bank today, paying in an American check. I was told that as of February 1st, they would not be accepting any more American checks. Just fyi.

That's inaccurate. Scotia Panama is considered to be part of Scotia Canada. It's not as jurisdictional as other Canadian banks doing business overseas (i.e. RBC or CIBC where Canadian stakes can be very minimal, depending on the jurisdiction).
I am assuming your talking about a check from the US. Are you saying they no longer will accept a personal check from the US for deposit into your personal account here in Boquete?
Yes. That's how I have been getting my money down here for the past 6 years, writing a check on my USA account. It always took about 3 weeks to clear, and cost around $21.00. The teller said it was the bank's new regulations. This is part of the fallout from the US demanding the banks to keep track of US citizens - the banks are pushing back, we are no longer worth having as customers, we cost them too much in record keeping.

On July 14, 2015, Scotiabank announced that it would buy Citigroup's retail and commercial banking operations in Panama and Costa Rica.

Oh my! That could be bad news for lots of folks. Thanks for sharing.
If one has online banking in the USA, one can make a wiretransfer to your bank in Panama. It will be here within 1-2 days. Ceapest and fasted way.
Sorry Robert, not accurate - - - generalizations can be dangerous.
Not ALL US banks, only some allow wiretransfers through their 'online banking'.
