I had a scary reminder that it is the season for venomous caterpillars and I want to share a first aid treatment I learned about that I have used effectively. As soon as you feel that sharp little dart of pain find the bleach and mix 1 part bleach with one part water and daub the sting area liberally with it. The bleach neutralizes the toxin. Leave it on there and reapply frequently. If the pain and swelling has not increased within an hour you are probably home free. Now you can wash off the bleach. I have used this twice in the last couple of years and it has definitely worked. I also used it on my dog who stepped on an Io moth caterpillar and she did not suffer from it.
I am especially sensitive to the venom, and a sting from as Asp (Puss) caterpillar sent me to the emergency room years ago. So I am extremely grateful to have a remedy to neutralize the toxin. I cannot remember where I got the information from. I always like to give my resources, but since I have my own experience to speak from I hope it will be helpful. You should still be vigilant about your reaction and seek medical treatment if your symptoms increase. In sensitive people the reactions can be severe and even deadly.
Here is a link to some remarkable photos of these beautiful little demons. In my 13+ years in Panama I have seen most of them. They are so easy NOT to see as they like the undersides of leaves and also blend well with whatever plant they are inhabiting.
