Not sure about direct TV. We have a slingbox set up at our house in Spring. Our kids are living there for now. It works great with high speed Internet. Different cable companies are available in different areas here. We have cableonda here and highly recommend them, but they do not have service everywhere. One of the many things you need to consider when deciding where to settle.
And we did bring our little dog with us, which was an experience in itself. But I'd do it again. Just be sure you're going to stay if you bring pets, or plan to take them back with you. We have a serious problem with expats bringing pets down here and then leaving them here when the bail. There are enough local animals that need homes without the extra mouths.
Let me know if you have questions about that as the timing can prove complicated.
My husband retired from Kroger. I was in investment banking for the energy sector (of course). Understand the desire to escape the rat race! We shipped a 20 ft container packed to the max. We brought some furniture, like our bed and recliner, but mostly tools. Our house does not have a garage so we invested in a job box like you see on construction sites and packed it full. We like to build things and the tools you get here are low quality, limited and expensive.
We have been fortunate with all dealings here. We had a great real estate agent and bought a home from an American. The attorney we used for that was fine. Our attorney for our visas is fantastic. Held our hands through every step. We have had a lot of work done on our house the last few months and have been fortunate to have had no problems at all.
You do hear some horror stories, but I think it has a lot to do with the way you handle yourself. We are guests here and feel blessed to be here. My husband is fairly fluent in Spanish and my comprehension is improving, although I wish I could converse better. But having some grasp of the language definitely helps.
Give us a shout when you head this way and we can show you around a bit.
Hi, Ron. My husband and I are from the Spring area. We moved here last June, but had purchased a home here in 2011. We love it, but it does have it's challenges. Unlike so many, we were emotionally and psychologically prepared to deal with the weather and challenges so that made it easier for us. That and we have a very strong marriage! We live in Alto Boquete, about 7km outside of Boquete proper.

What Attracts you to Boquete?
