I think it's very wise to leave the dog at home until you decide to move permanently (if you do). I think you mentioned staying at the Hotel Fundadora. It is downtown, so you would not need a rental car for all of your stay, unless you plan to do a lot of sightseeing around the area. Cowboy Dave in Boquete is the person to go to for rental cars. If you really want to know what it is like to live here, rent a casita, don't stay in a hotel, so that you have to go out shopping for food, experience the water and electricity cut-outs etc. Also sample the driving... If you can remember that this is Panama, not America, you will have a fabulous time.
Hello Bruce,
We came down first of all with International Living and only visited Boquete for 2 days, so we came back last September for 3 weeks, and decided we wanted to live here. Besides the beautiful area, it is the friendliness and willingness of all the people (especially ex-pats) to help that really appealed to us. I think that your experiences with the people here will ultimately be the deciding factor .Just go to Sugar and Spice for breakfast and strike up a conversation with anyone there.
Hillside Haven is a beautiful, beautiful casita, but you do need 4 wheel drive to get up their steep road, and no pets allowed. However, Al Mills, the owner, is just finishing completely refurbishing a casita within easy walking distance to town, and dogs are allowed. Not many places allow big dogs. You could email him on almills10@gmail.com and see what he says. Mention that Maureen Pilson recommended him. Think carefully before bringing your dog down for a short stay. There are a lot of hoops to go through to get it here, and his flight will cost more than yours probably. There are many references to bringing a pet down. Go to www.goldenfrog.net to start with. Many people use them to help with the vet at Tocumen Airport, and to transport themselves and their pet to Boquete. Not cheap, but it was worth it to us.
Welcome Bruce!
