I believe this to be the same plant that the Mexicans make both Tequila and Blue Agave from!
Whilst most people will know what Tequila is many will not be familiar with "Blue Agave". It is a very sweet, honey like substance it very low on the Glycemic Index and so very useful for diabetics! I get mine from a lady named Jane Moody who runs a baking supplies club in Boquete (Phone 65987684 for details). I have numerous "baby" plants available if anyone wants to try them!
