I am looking at buying a Kindle Fire HDX in the US. It comes with wi-fi or 4G LTE from ATT or Verizon.
Does this 4G LTE mean anything in Panama or I would still need to get a 4G setup from Claro or another company in Panama?
Also, how widespread is wi-fi in Boquete and around David, etc. Is it useable for the GPS functions etc?

It will work Wifi anyplace there is Wifi
It will work on any cell network but not at LTE speeds, there is no LTE in Panama, yet
You will need to buy a chip and pay for 3.xG service with any of the four carriers
The GPS will work anyplace in the world Wifi is present in some restaurants, hotels and my house.
I just used WiFi with mine and no use to buy a chip. AT&T has a WiFi App for International calling. Just down load it to a tablet or phone. It works with WiFi. I used it down there last year. This was for a visit. I'm moving there in April and have an Unlocked phone for one of the four carriers in Panama. Then I will purchase the chip.
Again, if your visiting you can use AT&T WiFi for phone service or Buy a chip (only for an unlocked device) with a local provider in Panama. Then you can buy minutes and data with out a plan. You have to make sure the device can be unlocked or it must be an already unlocked phone. AT&T will give the unlock code by email the same day you contact them.
Also, this is not news to people in Panama but, I just got magic jack and like it. 4 or 5 options for phone numbers I chose one in my USA city with same area code. I works great. I have been playing with it all day.
It does work with wireless now on cell phones also. Download the android or Iphone wireless magic jack APP. And, the cell phone/wifi magic jack is Free (all you need is wifi). The land line (magic jack plus) you have to purchase. And, the landline (magicjack plus) works with WiFi also for laptops.
ilaery I am not aware of what AT&T charges but if you use prepaid with Mas Movil here you get unlimited cellular data for $14.95 for a month. All Kindles are sold unlocked so that in a non issue.
Thanks Lee. Cynthia would be better off with a Mas Movil chip. We had discussed the Mas Movil and I'll use that when I move there. The AT&T Wireless International is something new. It is very inexpensive and I don't see how they can market this. When I used it, it was PayGo. Like 6 cents a minute. It may be different now. I think it's great for a visit since most places have WiFi or know a place near by in Boquete that does have WiFi.
Check this out Lee. It is very interesting. This service works for local panama calls and international calls. Country numbers must be known.

I am planning on buying a phone in Panama when I visit in Feb. Can't wait.
It has been -20 degrees in Chicago area for weeks. Argh.. Ready for that to be over permanently.
