In addition to being the day of our fund raiser, The Great Boquete Soup Fest (11:30-2 at the BCP), today is the sixth birthday of the Boquete Knitters and Quilters.
We started as an all ex-pat group, meeting at the Fundadores Hotel on their back patio. We eventually moved to our current location at the Fundacion Pro Integracion (Handicap Foundation) where we get together every Friday afternoon from 1 to 3PM to knit, show off our finished items, replenish our yarn for new projects, and visit.
Latina Panamanian ladies saw us knitting and were intrigued by this "tejer con dos agujas" (knitting with two needles), as this is an unfamiliar art in Panama. They asked to learn, so, with much laughter and use of a Spanish-English dictionary, we set out to teach them. They took to it like ducks to water and began making beautiful blankets and sweaters and caps. They also knit in public and were seen by Ngabe-Bugle Panamanian ladies.
The Ngabe-Bugle ladies came to us and asked if we would let them learn how to knit. Of course we said "YES!". And they have taken to it like ducks to water.
Thanks to the wonderful work of Darlene Lindholm, who made it her mission to make quilts for "our" babies, we have joined forces with several talented quilters and expanded from "Boquete Knitters" to "Boquete Knitters and Quilters".
In the past six years we have donated well over 3,000 items: quilts, blankets, sweaters, caps and booties to various clinics for distribution to their needy clients. We also supply the softest caps to the pediatric oncology department at the Obaldia Hospital in David for children undergoing chemotherapy.
Now we are six. Please join us in celebrating.

The Soup Kitchen was once again, a great event. One of the most enjoyable luncheons of the year. Thanks Brandy, cooks, and all involved.
