Hello All,
We now have 2 weeks left before our overnight expedition to the summit of Volcan Baru (from the Volcan side). This is a second notice to all those who are interested. Here are the details.
We will start the climb at 5am on Friday February 17th, 2012 in Volcan. As of right now we have 21 climbers ready to go. The experience levels range from professional hiker to absolute beginner. It’s important for all to know that there will be many different types of paces kept on the hike. Those who feel like racing to the top are more than welcome and those who want to take it nice and easy all the way I’ll be right there with you with my 12 year old son.
Once we arrive at the caldera we will set up a base camp per say. From there it’s a nice and comfortable 30 minute hike to the famous Volcan Baru cross. I will have a nice camera and I will be documenting the entire trip so that we will all have a great video and photo album of our hike. A friend of mine just made the hike and slept at the top where he reported temperatures of 16 degrees Celsius (that’s about 60 degrees F).. With that being said the weather at the top is funny. So bring a tent, warm sleeping bag, some warm clothes, etc. Our hopes will be that we will have a crystal clear evening and celestial visibility will perfect. We can expect lots of movement up there. For us early risers we will keep our fingers crossed and pray for a clear day to see the amazing light show that can only be appreciated from 11,400 feet above sea level and the spectacular views that should follow of both the Pacific and Caribbean waters. After that we will start the decent. Generally it takes half the time to return to the bottom where we started. After the hike we will all head over to Jorge’s Restaurant Mana’s to unwind, relax, eat an early dinner then part company.
I have arranged discounted bed and breakfast accommodations for anyone who might be driving a bit of a distance and would rather stay Thursday night in Volcan. There are 6 rooms available so be sure to get in touch with me if you want to take advantage of this. It will be at Jorge’s B&B (upstairs from Mana’s Restaurant on the edge of town) Once we get a bit closer to departure date I will go over the more specific details with those who are coming.
All are welcome to come and remember there is NO guide fee’s. Depending on what time we actually start there may be small cost to climb the mountain ( I think it’s like 5 bucks and it’s paid to the Panama National Park Rangers). They generally aren’t there before 8am though.
Email me or call me if you are dying for an adventure or if you just want to go on a great hike. If you think someone might be interested in this please forward them this email.
Here is a link to my blog documenting our last climb back in June. If you have ever wondered what it is like the you should read it. It was great..

Hi Eric!!
Would love to but unfortunately I am not in Panama at the present time. Perhaps if you have another in the future I'll join you. Please take lots of photos so we can all see your adventure!! Cheers!! :))
If you need camping equipment for this trek, the Bid 4 Boquete Venta de Patio sale has lots of camping equipment. At least two sleeping bags (one brand new), small tent, plus other items.
Doors open at noon on Sunday, Feb 12.
Starting the climb in Volcan? Adding many K to the hike!
