Good Morning, Dan
Thank you for your response. It is not surprising that you suggest not bringing our own horses but we will make that decision..closer to the time. Glad to hear your comments about the environment being healthy for horses...
What we purchased is at 4,000 feet. Not much pasture but it appears that hay is easily available and the intent is to have help like you have ...keep the small pasture clean and privide hay.
Our planned "stable" is really a 6x8 "walk out basement"..cut into the hillside with a living quarters above. This is for our use until we build the "house" at the top of the property.
It is nice to have someone already there that understands the care of horses.... We certainly will be in touch in January when we arrive for the start of our building.
One last question, do you know the people with the facitily on the David Rd. that has the jumps in the fields etc? We tried to stop in there to no avail but understand they are Canadians and it appears, brought down there own animals.
Sorry not to have responded earlier. Due to a close-by lightning strike, my internet connection was down for about two weeks, and I am just catching up.
No, I won't suggest that you not bring your horses. It will be expensive and difficult, but if it is that important to you, you will find a way.
The highlands here are great for horses, as the climate seems to discourage carriers of infectious anemia (always fatal) and other diseases.
I understand why you prefer to take care of your horses yourself. I sort of split the difference, by having a full time employee who feeds the horses, takes care of the fences, and generally maintains our finca. I ride as often as I can, and although he grooms the horses I am about to ride, I do it again myself, mainly to catch any little problem he may have missed.
Horses here do not need to be stabled, and I think it is a bad idea to do so. If you can find a pasture, and there is lots of it, I think that would be best. It is never cold, and shelters can easily be erected for the rainy season; rain rot can otherwise be a problem. You might consider looking in the Potrerillos Arriba area, where there is more reasonably flat pasturage than elsewhere at what I consider a suitable elevation, i.e., above 3,000 feet.
In another post, you expressed an interest in a "poor boy's" polo club. There are lots of "cowboys" here, and they enjoy rodeo immensely. They, and their horses, would be ideal for a polo team. Unfortunately, I have not been able to stimulate any interest at all. Having a bit of a back problem, which has limited my riding for the past year or so, I haven't done much to push the idea recently. Perhaps when you get here, we can chat about it.
Visiting Boquete at the end of January....Interested in modest real estate that could accommodate 2 horses.
Any information as to who, where, what we may need to move along on this would be helpful.
We ride English and wish to continue doing considerable trail riding. Is it feasible?
Thank you, in advance, for any help with our questions.
