I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on systems to make sure the water at our house in Santa Lucia is free of bacteria? Is reverse osmosis or UV better?

The first question is whether you want a whole house system or point of use at sinks. Whole house means you don't have to worry about bad water while taking a shower or bath but requires a more significant investment. Reverse osmosis will remove all of the bacteria as well as the minerals. UV light is mostly effective but is not fool proof. It has to be sized correctly and requires very clean water, otherwise bacteria can "hide" in/on dirt particles that flow past the light.

Thanks. My husband and I have been talking about what we want. What we are absolutely sure we want is bacteria free water that we put in our bodies. We are thinking about installing a whole house system when we get down there full time, as that sounds the best for the long term.
This is all very useful information everyone. I appreciate it.

@JOYCE. The swimming pool filter will get the mud out. The rest can be filters and UV all installed by Grupo Aguas along the main road at Alto Boquete.

If you own your home, I suggest contacting Grupo Aguas Chiriqui and having installed its four-part filtration system plus UV. It's expensive, but it sterilizes the water throughout your house.
BOIL the water really good, 10 minutes after it starts to bubble up. DO NOT ALLOW ANY WATER FROM THE TAP TO ENTER YOUR BODY (IE. BRUSHING TEETH WATER, ICE CUBES, COFFEE/TEA WATER, ETC...). This is the method I've used the past 17 years that has worked. The water situation in Santa Lucia is horrible with all kinds of bacteria ie E-coli, etc... I have three filters on my input water line and have to change them every week. They are black and slimy. Get a real big POT and boil the water, that's my recommendation.
I lived in Santa Lucia. The water is horrible and full of black sludge. I have been director of a mineral water factory in Spain. What I recommend is to install a small swimming pool silicon sand filter with the relevant pool pump. After that normal filters and UV. The silicon sand filter can be backwashed and the water into the gutter or garden.
