About 8 or 9PM tonight the Caldera checkpoint northbound was backed up both lanes for over a mile. I hope it's just a sat. nite thing, I have to go to David next week during the day.
You need to be a member of Boquete Ning to add comments!
There were several checkpoints established yesterday, not just in Caldera. IMHO, they were looking for someone or something. We were on a backroad toward Costa Rica and then in Volcan, too.
Alto al Crimen worked with the Minister of Security to get this checkpoint, and the numbers of property crimes in Boquete have been reduced. As someone else said the police know that it is usually outsiders who come here to commit crimes. They are being especially careful during the feria because they don't want the bad guys to slip in along with the majority of good guys. It is an inconvenience, but not nearly as inconvenient as burglaries with property losses or home invasions with personal injuries and property losses to boot.
As many of you have experienced, the police often just eyeball you and wave you through. But they need to do the actual checks frequently enough to have a good deterrent.
Interesting! Crime in my area has actually gone up after the checkpoint was installed. Specifically, two burglaries and a home invasion. Do you have before and after stats?
In all likelihood, this is because it is the first weekend of the fair in Boquete and the accompanying influx of out-of-towners. As the police believe that the most heinous crimes in the area are perpetrated by those who live outside the community, they are checking with added care.

The Flower Fair is going on in Boquete for two weeks. Expect a lot of traffic. Go early to David and try to come back early. Good luck!

That is what we saw at 3:45 today on our way in to David and even worse when we came home about 6pm
A little prevention goes a long way.
