In the herbal tradition Ashwagandha's sharp and pungent principle, indicates a warming, strengthening action. It raises metabolism, stimulates digestion, clears mucus and improves circulation. Ashwaganda  has been held in high regard by generations of people for its ability to increase vitality, energy, endurance and stamina, promote longevity and strengthen the immune system without stimulating the body's reserves.

Cloud forest Botanicals now has this plant in organic tincture form (both 1oz & 2oz sizes). Come see us at the Tuesday Market or order online at www.cloudforestbotanicals.com

Some PHYTOChemistry

Ashwagandha's extract was found to have many interesting chemical constitutents. It has 12 alkaloids : Alkaloids have mostly pharmacological effects and are used in many medicines. Several sitoindosides which are helpful in redusing stress ,35 withanolides and various other steroidal lactories have been traced in the roots of Ashwagandha that makes it effective as an aphrodisiac, sedative, narcotic, diuretic, debostruent and restorative in its properties. Other important compounds that are present in the roots are withancil (an acid), glycosides, dulcitol, and starch, glycine, tyrosine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, alanine and cysteine which are amino acids. Two main types of Withanolides (A and D) are found in the leaves of this shrub. Withanolides are found to exhibit measurable antiinflammatory properties.

  • Thanks to Anderson Cooper and CNN for this report. An interesting 8 minute look at how Big Pharma and Big Government walk hand in hand.  With so much money at stake, it's little wonder the pharmaceutical companies want to eliminate people's right to choose natural alternatives--and still less wonder that they are willing to lie, forge, fake and misrepresent almost anything in pursuit of their profits.

  • And this just in, received this morning from yet another happy herbal client -

DW has sent you a message on Boquete Panama (Sept 30,2013)
     Subject: "gut" issues
     ------------
Just wanted to give you and Dianne an update. I took 2 doses of both the gut health 2 and garlic on Tuesday and another this morning. The feeling of inflammation immediately (seriously immediately!) went away and I have had no pain, discomfort or acid reflux since the very first dose. Thanks soooo much! > Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2013 23:50:41 +0000

    gracias for that,

Dianne H ( and for Eliz)

An overview of Ashwagandha, published by the National Institute of Health in its National Library of Medicine.

NOT "snake oil" as intimated by some -- SCIENCE.

But then, despite overwhelming evidence in support, some people deny the science of climate change and the spherical nature of the Earth. Go figure.

      • I read this entire article with great interest. Nothing short of fascinating. Elisabeth and Diane, in the form that you have, what is the procedure? Drops on food, make a tea? I missed you at the market. I'd like to try.

        • Hi, Gary-- I private messaged you with info. Give me a call. This Ashwagandha root that we have tinctured was organically grown here and is both really strong and really pure. It is a terrific tincture. Glad you are interested.

          Elizabeth

        • Hey Gary,

We have a tinctured form of the Ashwaganda root. It can be taken orally (under the tongue) or in water. If you email Eliz or me we can arrange a drop-off in town. Gracias. dlh

      • No problem.  I think every adult should make their own life choices.  I personally prefer medications that have been vetted by clinical trials, but as we all know, even trials can result in approval of medications that are found to have serious side effects later.  I use the same search engines you do to get your "support" information and photographs, and I don't find any conclusive vetting data.

It's great that you want to make a buck selling stuff that might work.  But, never forget that you are also playing with the health and well-being of people who buy your products.

          http://commonground.ca/2012/01/prescription-drug-deaths/

"Prescription drugs taken as prescribed in hospitals are the fourth leading cause of death in the US and Canada, after cancer, heart disease and strokes. They cause about 10,000 deaths a year in Canada and about 106,000 deaths a year and over two million serious injuries in the US. As many as another 10,000 deaths a year in Canada are thought to occur outside hospitals due to the wrong drug, dosage errors and adverse reactions. One out of four admissions to internal medicine in Canadian hospitals is related to prescription drugs, of which 70% are preventable. Canadians now spend more on prescription drugs ($24 billion) than we do on doctors ($18 billion)."

          Who's playing with people's health and well-being?

In addition to the people dying in hospitals or at home taking their doctor prescribed pills exactly as they were told to, the Center for Disease Control has lots of information and statistics about tens of thousands of people dying every year from overdose or abuse of prescription drugs (primarily pain killers). The CDC has almost nothing to say about herb related fatalities beyond a very few anecdotal reports of allergic reactions.

          http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/SpecialFeatures/ucm279676.htm

You only want to take medications that have been vetted by clinical trials? Good luck with that. Clinical trials are conducted by the companies seeking to market them...and the FDA relies for its decisions entirely upon the results fed to them by the companies seeking to market the drugs. Can we spell 'conflict of interest'? As for over the counter medications, no clinical trials are required by the FDA--submission of an industry generated monograph with a list of ingredients, recommended doses and what the manufacture claims the medication is good for is essentially all that is required.

As you say, adults should make their own decisions about life choices. One hopes they are making informed choices. But the reality is that many people do not take the time or make the effort to learn what may or may not be in their best interests. They are won over by the perceived societal authority of the white coat or the onslaught of television/media ads and they put their well-being at risk in hopes of a magic, quick cure that doesn't require them to assess and modify their lifestyle.

The reality of plant based medicine is that for most of the world's population, it is still the first "go to" choice. In Europe  herbal products are considered 'mainstream' and are frequently recommended by physicians instead of prescription drugs. For some areas of the world, plant medicine  is the ONLY choice available. A few decades ago, this was also true in the US.

As for "making a buck," the pharmaceutical industry (the ones responsible for the 4th leading cause of death, remember) rakes in billions upon billions of dollars annually--primarily from US consumers (more than 53%).

Rather than dismiss out of hand as "snake oil" a healing tradition with  thousands of years of accumulated knowledge and wisdom behind it--because it doesn't have a billion dollar advertising budget--perhaps modern health consumers would fare better if they, too, considered Nature's offerings as the first choice to deal with health challenges instead of mindlessly reaching for potentially fatal chemical concoctions.

          • Debate teams must really love the net.  You can find pro and con arguments on just about any subject.  I extracted a few ditties (heavily redacted, and probably written by pharm industry lawyers) with respect to your comments, but I am kind of tiring on this post now, so won't jump back into it again.  You will get the last word ;-)

            ----

In our health-conscious nation, what could be healthier than turning to so-called health foods? What could be more natural than consuming so-called natural herbs to boost your energy, to relax, to obtain restful sleep, to counter the effects of menopause, or to lose weight?

The real question is, what could be more dangerous?

As thousands of Americans have learned the hard way, many products touted as “natural” and “pure” are, instead, pure poison . . . triggering organ failures that require organ transplants, or leaving families devastated by the sudden death of previously-vigorous loved ones.

In a very recent case, a beautiful health-conscious woman who looked half her age suddenly became a liver transplant candidate after taking a variety of herbal supplement products some of which included Kava and Spirulina Blue-Green Algae. Our client’s doctors were puzzled until they stumbled upon the herbal supplement connection. Kava, which purports to reduce stress and anxiety, has been proven to trigger liver failure if harvested improperly. Microcystin toxins, which are chemicals naturally produced and found in Spirulina Blue-Green Algae products, are often derived from the toxic waters of polluted lakes and streams. Side effects include liver failure and kidney failure. These products can cause enormous harm and often the victim is the picture of health before taking them.

In yet another recent case, a teacher seeking more energy for the challenges of the classroom fell for the sales pitch of a major health food chain store. She ended up with acute liver failure after consuming a product off the shelf which boasts of “15 of the most exotic energy substances on earth,” Spirulina Blue-Green Algae, and Yerba Mate, a South American holly plant derivative with alleged curative powers. During the manufacturing process, contaminants had seeped into this already-risky mix, serving up a toxic cocktail.

How do these preventable tragedies happen? One reason is, the $23 billion dietary/herbal supplement industry has been pulling the wool over our eyes for years with deceptive advertising badmouthing the pharmaceutical industry. “Medicines concocted synthetically by the big drug companies make you sicker,” the ads say. “Dietary supplements,” they claim, “put you firmly on the path to good health, the natural way.”

            Here are the real facts:

Pharmaceuticals in the United States unlike “health foods” or “herbal supplements” are heavily regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Before new drugs can be put on the market, there must be research that demonstrates safety and efficacy. In 1994 the FDA deregulated the Herbal Dietary Supplement industry by passing the Dietary Supplement and Health Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA), basically placing the responsibility of regulation, quality control and standardization squarely on the shoulders of the manufacturer to test for purity contamination as well as duty to warn. In other words, the so-called health foods don’t need to jump through the regulatory hoops as do their rivals in the pharmaceutical market. Exempt from testing and labeling requirements, unscrupulous manufacturers bottle unscientific witch’s brews without even telling us what is in them. And 21st century snake-oil salesmen fabricate whatever curative claims they think an uninformed public will believe.

Finally, after 13 years, the FDA acknowledged in a Consumer Advisory that the health risk was significant enough to establish Current Good Manufacturing Process (CGMP) regulations governing the dietary supplement industry. Rolled out over a three year period beginning June 1, 2008, these quality control rules will help ensure that herbal supplements and other health food products are manufactured free of contamination. But for many innocent victims, this is too little, too late. For example, in the first year they are in effect, the FDA rules make testing mandatory only for manufacturers with more than 500 employees. This means that for most companies, FDA scrutiny comes only after people have become seriously ill or died.
