We are fortunate to have here in Boquete some fine community organizations. I think it should be remembered though, that these groups are administrated by volunteers. Some of them struggle to find candidates for their Board of Directors. Quite often volunteer groups are so occupied with their mission that public relations beomes a low priority, especially if they perceive that they may be setting themselves up for criticism. Sometimes It's better to just ask "How can I help?"

I think there is a bit more to the transformation of coffee farms into housing. The serious decline in coffee prices around 2001 made it unprofitable for many growers to produce coffee and they gladly sold their land and pocketed the $$$. The expat buyer cannot exist without the Panamanian seller.
However unpopular, I personally agree with your 'take, and take, and take' which speaks to 'give a man a fish....'. although providing subsidized housing I think falls into the 'take' category. Perhaps the answer is in better education and teaching vocational skill sets so they can do more than pick coffee.
As to someone else's comment - if i own property in Panama and have legal residency I do not consider myself a 'guest', however others are free to consider themselves as they choose.
Sounds like Tuesday at the BCP there will be a great opportunity to learn and ask questions about the functions of some of these groups and how an individual can help.
I would suggest the moderator enter some of the conversations I see on the site and caution people about how their discussions can get out of hand due to subject matter, regardless of what our intentions are good, bad, or indifferent, we should all remember that we are guests in Panama and should act as such, just as Panamanians in the U.S. are guests, our cultures are not the same and we must remember that....................
You think? ! Come on Lee..this person adds no value to Ning and I think criticizing the charities here should be the last comment he gets to write.

I think people are entitled to their opinions, even if you or I disagree with them. JS contributes a lot of good information to this board and his opinion is shared by many other local people I have met. Right or wrong in your eyes, not all the local people appreciate what is done by new immigrants here.

I understand but that was harsh.

Hope, I assume you are talking about Johnny Sunshine. All he does is post links from Newsroom Panama and Panama Guide (which we can all go to on our own without his help) and criticize the gringo expats and everything they do. The best response to him would be to ignore him and not respond to his toxic posts. He obviously gets off by upsetting people. Don't feed him.
I can't wait to see some of this in person!!!! 15 "WORKING" days left until retirement. People should pay money for this show---but it is FREE in Boquete. lol
Future new comer with advanced knowledge of some real characters!!!
