The US has NO right to Gitmo. This is Cuban property that the US extorted from a weak caribbean island in the early 20th century at a ridiculously low cost to the US. It is time to right a grave injustice. As for the poverty, if you had the choice, would you rather live there, than the slums of Panama City, San Jose, Caracas, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Hondura, El Salvadore, Nicaragua etc, etc.........where the US exerted and still exerts it's influence and "DEMOCRACY". Read your history. Do you even know the conditions that the Cuban people lived in under Batista.
Two observations: it's very dangerous for governments to let expectations get really exhuberent and then pull the plug, and seems like everyday as Fidel gets older, Raul gets more control and opens up a little more. I am trying to be optimistic for the Cuban people.
Cuba is a disaster as far as the buildings falling apart and the Castro brothers, but the best part are the people. I am married to one and have been to the island and lived with her family for 2 weeks. Even though they do not have much, they would give you the shirt off there backs and greatly appreciate anything you do for them.
As far as Obama wanting to re-establish diplomatic relations ect..Huge mistake..Any money that goes to Cuba goes to the corrupt government and not the people. The money exchange rate is 15% and workers get paid in the lower money in which they cannot buy anything and forced to exchange to the CUC which is another 15% loss. As a specialist doctor , my wife only made $23.00 a month. As a socialist country, the government gives them little or nothing. The people are starving and the tourism dollars do nothng for them. Threy blame us for there problems and the embargo, but you have to remember, the rest of the world can trade and import/export with the, especially the south american countries. What we allow in the future will only show the Cuban people how corrupt the government is while they get more rich and the people starve. They need another revolution. The Castro brothers are demanding we close GITMO and also give them a ton of money. So my question is: Whats in it for us????

"What we allow in the future" and "What's in it for us?" Give me a break!

Cuba and Cubanos are very special. It's not a tiny Caribbean island and there are some amazing things to do, eat, see, and hear. Visiting there several times (not to the mass tourism locations) has been one of my best travel choices.
Just returned from my second trip to Cuba. It was a wonderful experience. Don't believe the propaganda about freedom of expression. The people we spoke to were very candid about the Cuban Government. That aside, it is a beautiful country. The people are open and warm, great music, clean, can be very inexpensive depending on your lifestyle and extremely SAFE. Worth the experience now before it opens up to the flood of Gringos, which is sure to happen. We stayed at private homes, which gave us the opportunity to interact with the people and much cheaper than hotels.

My wife and I have travelled Cuba several times. She got some friends there. We rented and stayed in private homes en La Havana Vieja. The experience is very good. We mingled with Cubans and they are very open and friendly. For us it was inexpensive. When my wife travels there she usually carry with her some "gifts" for her friends and they appreciate very much something so simple as toothpaste.
I do agree that it is extremely safe. It is a high crime or felony if somebody do something to a tourist. So penalties are a good deterrent for crime there.

Time is changing..... people need to evolve.
In this case, evolution can only be solved with revolution.
Well you just have to start it in the USA that have some serious problems affecting its own people.
