Hi everybody. Does anyone know if we can come to Panama on a one way plane ticket. We are coming with all the required documents to apply for a pensionado visa. It seems like such a waste of money to buy a return ticket when we don't plan on coming back to Canada in the near future.

Just got dinged by Copa on this... flying back from Peru into Panama.... and they would not let me board unless I had a ticket showing I was leaving Panama. Fcuking ridiculous and totally pissed me off, but I had no choice but to buy a ticket - on the fly with no calendar or plan, and now I am looking at paying the change fee now that I have a better date in mind to visit friends in the states. This was in June.
However, in April, when I was flying from BOS to PTY on Copa, the gate agent hassled me, but eventually let me go without having to buy a ticket because I had like 4 oversized luggage items and got teary-eyed telling her my beloved cat was waiting for me to return home to Panama.
Soooooo, it isn't set in stone. But you never know. And it sucks. And it's no fair. Blah blah blah
I'm going to have my lawyer draft a letter that I am in the residency process, and also bring my apartment rental receipt with me when I fly back to Panama in the fall. I hate having to buy a 2-way ticket when I don't know what my return plans are, if any.
It's just one more way for the airlines to get more money. If it was a goven't mandate, they wouldn't have the ability to let you go even one time. It's whether or not the gate agent wants to be nice or not...
Good luck.
Just buy a fully refundable one-way ticket back to the US, and return it once you get here. No big deal, no fees, no hassle at the airport. What's the beef?
Lux my husband is leaning toward your reply. I'm still on the wall considering all the replies.
Here is the website for Caribe Shuttle if you want to check it out. It cost us around $68 for two one-way tickets from Bocas to Puerto Viejo, C.R., which we did indeed use when we did our first border hop. http://caribeshuttle.com/

Lindsay, Nancy, Hillary you have made my day brighter. Thanks.
You can do business with this woman. She is very professional and will take care of a ticket out of Panama if you need it.

We travel with one way tickets to Panama on American Airlines. No issues at all.
We came to Panama in February on Copa Airlines with a one-way ticket and had purchased a ticket from Bocas del Toro to Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica, on Caribe Shuttle bus. This was totally acceptable to Copa.
The Airline Company is responsible for checking the "Onward Travel" document before boarding the aircraft in your country of origin not the Panamanian Immigration. United accepts Tica Bus Tickets (approx $42 oneway) out of Panama as ONWARD travel. I bought one online (all pdf printable tickets) from Tica headquarters in Costa Rica online from PTY to SOJ. They will attach passport numbers and dates on the Bus ticket for the Airline Company where you check in aquiring a boarding pass. The law states onward travel (land, air, sea) if you enter Panama by air. If you leave Panama by Land and return to Panama by land they require a return airline ticket to your passport country, $500 cash or bank statement, Costa Rica Exit Tax required to leave Costa Rica also. Doesn't make much sense but that is how it is right now. (border requirements can change on attitudes at any moment) Fortunately, I took a three day mini vacation the first week of May to Costa Rica and no problems. I'm going up again this Thursday and will report back on the happenings at Paso Canoas on Friday or Saturday.
So, yes you can come on a one way ticket. I did and not a problem. Mine was on United. I don't know about the other airlines but I would assume the follow the Panamanian Law also.
$42 will save the day.
Good Luck,
